Crate training problems, is it seperation anxiety?

Hi all,
Looking for some guidance, it's been waaay too long since I last potty trained a puppy, but need some help for my SIL.

My SIL has a neutered male 9 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback. She is having trouble fully potty training him. Here is the background:

1. Obtained from a breeder who allowed the puppies to potty on paper in the house.
2. SIL now uses a crate and tying his leash to her belt so he is by her side all the time to potty train. Usually in the house he is good at this point. Will still go occasionally in her BF's house.
3. Dexter is in the crate while she is gone from the house during the day. He will pee in the crate during the day while she is gone.
4. A crate is used at night, as long as the crate is in the bedroom with SIL Dexter will remain dry in it. When crate is in other room, he will pee in it.
5. SIL keeps the crate to a size where he doesn't have a ton of room to roam around and play, so thought it would be small enough he would like to keep clean, but that hasn't panned out.

Also, interesting adds to the scene. When he would go in the house, Dex would not hide it, but look right at you and squat. Dominance/challenge? I'm not too familiar with RR's but the breeder hasn't been much help in this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much, Terri
