Deterring dogs from fouling outside your house

Sorry if this is the wrong area. I am desperate to know how I can deter dogs from fouling outside my house. I have tried jeys fluid and bleech but nothing is working. Before I am pounced upon, i am not anti-dog but anti-dog owner who lets their dog leave a disgusting mess without clearing it up. As usual I can never catch the culprits. I don't own a dog but its becoming like a sewer outside my own home and why should i have to clear it up but if i don't, it spreads and its awful having to tip toe though it.

You could always put a little sign out there that says "If he poops, you scoop" with a trash can

Short of a fence not much.  Or sitting by the window to watch for them.  Bleach and ammonia both will kill your own grass and plants.  Ammonia is probably a little more effective than bleach.

but really nothing replaces waiting so you can deliver an in-person request, or at least turn them in to the homeowners association or something for trespassing.  Most cities/towns have a leash law -- you may want to check out what is required where you live so you know to whom it is most appropriate to report something like that.

The council do have signs up but they are ignored. I don't want a trash can outside my own house, they should take it home or better still let them do their poop on the owners property and then take them for a walk. I really am sick of dog owners who think they can let their dogs poop anywhere without cleaning it up. No place is sacred, not even a grave yard. The UK has become a filthy place to live, its dangerous for young children, they can't even enjoy a park without treading in something.

They are on a leesh calliecritturs, its the owners who are letting them poop and not cleaning it away. I might try one of those noise detrerants that only dogs can hear. Pity it can't be for the owner as i know its not the dogs fault.

Sorry just re-read your message, they are doing it on a public pavement outside my home not that that should make any difference as its against the law. The law should fine these people alot more than just a few hundred pounds. They also do it at night when not many people are around.

Yes, it is a pity.  Maybe you could put up just a sign asking people to not allow their dogs to eliminate on your property and maybe add "smile, you're being recorded".

I'm not trying to be snarky, so please don't mistake this for that, but honestly you aren't being very realistic -- one of the purposes FOR a walk is to encourage the dog to elminate while it's outside.  It would be virtually impossible for a dog NOT to elminate on a walk and I don't know of any sort of a signal that will go off when the dog eliminates.  A motion sensor would go off if anyone walked by.

Truly about the only thing that's really possible is to watch for the offenders.  You could then sound a boat horn or simply say audibly "Please clear that away before you leave."  Or follow them home and deposit a little paper bag with the offending stuff in it on THEIR doorstep with a note that says "You forgot this!"  -- then they know they've been caught AND followed.

Providing baggies (or even simply appearing at your door WITH a bag saying "Please take that with you when you leave" would work.  they may decide to change the path of their walk and not even go by your home then!

And truly?  Jackie has a **really** good idea there.  Mounting a webcam to sweep and record might be more of a deterrent than anything else.

I have thought about mentioning about them being recorded Jackie and might just try that. Will look on-line for sign makers and see what I can find. I still might buy a noise deterant though as it might just help and I'm getting desperate.

I disagree with you calliecritturs, if dog owners had a garden then they would use it and can be trained to use it. Although i don't own a dog, i have worked with them and have watched Ceasur Malan and know it can be done if owners actually took the time to train them. Walkies should just be that, for exercise, not to poop in public areas and not clean it up. As for asking them to bag it, you can forget that as all i have got when i have seen them is alot of abuse.

As for the motion censor, it can only be heard by dogs and not humans.

Personally, I think a dog can eliminate ANYWHERE (as long as its outside and not indoors)....the owner needs to pick it up no matter where it is.

I think having a high pitched "deterrant" sound is extremely rude for the dogs-those things hurt their ears. Its not the dogs fault for the owner being ignorant.

I never walk my dogs with the intention of having them poop but many people do because they have no yard or for their own reasons.  In fact my dog Rex will not poop anywhere but his own yard unless it's an emergency or he's become comfortable in a certain area.   The fact is, most dogs will poop when out walking.  I don't stop my dogs from pooping when we're out and about.  I always clean up after them and don't allow them to poop on someone else's property.  I prefer not to have to clean up after my dogs (carrying those bags isn't pleasant) and try and have them poop before we go out.

I've dealt with your problem for many years and have found no long term solution.  I hope the motion sensor works.  I'd be interested to hear a follow up if you try that.  I've resigned myself to cleaning up my front yard daily as I silently curse the irresponsible dog owners who allowed their dogs to foul my yard.

Of course they *can* be trained to use it -- but we're already talking about owners who don't "care" enough to carry a bag with them.  It matters not what country you are in, the criteria for owning a pet never includes "common sense" nor does it usually include "manners".  Unfortunately it is the lack of those two things that causes the problem no matter which continent you live upon.

And in fairness, many many dog owners don't have a garden (or "yard" as it's called in the US just so folks understand what we're saying -- in the US my "garden" has flowers and not grass - you'd call the part of your property where there is grass either "yard" or "lawn";) so they walk the dog.  And it's typically a city-dwelling dog who is comfortable to elminate solid waste on sidewalk (or "pavement" in the UK).  It would have to be a dire emergency for my dogs to use a concrete or asphalt surface.

We all understand your quandry -- there are rude people all over the world.

I hear you!  I'm one of those without a yard and walk my dog daily.  I always pick up and if for some reason I get stranded I always go back later.  HOWEVER,

about 6 months ago, this guy that lives at the end of my street started walking his THREE dogs and not picking up.  My husband tried to speak to him nicely and he wouldn't hear anything he had to say.  SO, I got the ENTIRE freakin' neighborhood involved.  My husband and I spoke to all the neighbors.  First, I wanted to make sure they didn't think that was me leaving poop everywhere.  Then, we told them who it was.  So, one neighboor put a sign at the end of his driveway, "pick up your POOP!!!"  And, another neighbor spoke to him a little more harshly than my husband had.

Needless to say, he did start picking up.  So, if you are finding poop your neighbors probably are too so between everyone watching them they will stop.

Boxermom2Marley, so you think they should be allowed to poop anywhere? So its alright for
them to poop in a park where children play? Can I just add that dog poop is not like rabbit
poop, it leaves debris, even when most of it is picked up, dog poop does not come in a dry package! its like human poop. As many dogs owners do not pick the poop up and its only the minority that do, they shouldn't be allowed to just let their dogs poop anywhere.

quote: I think having a high pitched "deterrant" sound is extremely rude for the dogs-those things hurt their ears. Its not the dogs fault for the owner being ignorant.

Its extremely rude and disgusting to leave dog mess and until the law changes that dog owners are punished more for not cleaning up their dogs mess then people will have to resort to desperate measures and it can be completely blamed on irresponsible dog owners.

calliecritturs, I live in area where all the houses have large gardens yet the owners still let them poop outside in public areas so for many it makes no difference to the owner wether they have a garden or not and of course they would prefer to let their dogs poop on someone elses property and not their own.

You can't reason with many of these culprits, I have had abuse thrown at me and wouldn't put myself in danger as they can be scary people.

willowchow, I wish my neighbours were like you, many don't seem to care if there is dog mess outside their house. I think 75% of all households owns a dog in my area so its why its an obsicle
    course where I live.

Jackie, thank you for admitting that its not a nice job cleaning up after your dog but as a dog owner then it should be the owners responsibilty as we both agree.

Sadly like with all animals that are kept, you should only be allowed to keep an animal if you have done some sort of training/exam for their care and responsibilty, sadly we don't live in a world where animals have enough laws on their side.
