    AKC therapy dog title

I am pretty excited about this, especially because since Josie is a member of love on a leash vs TDI, she doesn't get a title. Just thought I would share for anyone else who has a therapy dog/thinking about doing therapy work.

Oops, can this be deleted? I didn't realize there was already a thread, or even a therapy dog section! Sorry :)

Not deleted I hope -- moved if need be ... but this is GOOD news!!

Nothing to be sorry about - it's news and it's GOOD news.  A training associate of mine had been recording her visits with TDI, so she submitted the paperwork and got her letter and patch in the mail that her dog now can add THD as an official AKC title to his name!

I don't know the specifics on the qualifications of one approved organization vs another, but people seem really excited to have this as a recognized title now!  Are you doing Therapy work already with your dogs?  Sounds like all you need to do is be sure it's been documented and submit those as your proof of 50 visits.  Yay for Therapy Dog Teams!

Yep, Josie is a very active member of Love on a leash. We've probably done close to 50 visits this year...too bad I just found out about this.

Her favorite to do is to go to the libraries and let the kids read to her! We also visit nursing homes, children's homes, schools, etc.

Well, shoot, it doesn't sound like it's too hard to get the facilities where your dog has been working to sign off on the brief letter to say they made 50 visits.  Even if it meant one letter from one place, another letter from some other place, etc.  Go for it! http://www.akc.org/akctherapydog/visits.cfm

I think I might try to get one for Sioux.  She's been to a gazillion places, because she visits nursing homes, senior centers, senior housing, health fairs, home bound elders, hospitals, and more, but hopefully they will take the letter from my Home Care Director here who supervises the volunteer program that sends us.  Sioux has been registered with Therapy Dogs, Inc. since 2002, so this coming year we'll also get our ten year patch from them.
