    Escape Artist...

So Chief has perfected the art of breaking out of his crate when we leave.  Unfortunately he cannot be trusted in the house alone, so I need a solution to this.  Today he ate a loaf of bread, next time it could be worse.  He has figured out that if he unlatches the bottom latch, then he can just squeeze through the door and he is free!  So we tried a small carabiner and he was able to unhook that as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions to keep Houdini in his crate?

I have several crates in my van and the dogs have gotten out at training before (actually I think each time was an accident, they bumped the door *just* right and as you can see that gold crate only has one simple latch) so now I use a REALLY tight bungee that goes across the door.

You could also buy some heavier duty snaps, or a D-link like this where it has to be unscrewed:

I've also just used the dogs' leashes both to keep it handy and snap the door shut.

Yep -- better locks.  I've gotten padlocks and kept them on crates -- and you can leave the key IN the lock or tied on a string to the lock (in case anyone HAS to let them out) -- go to Home Depot - you'll find a TON of various kinds of locks and that D-ring Lies has would work great as well.

Thanks!  Great idea with the d ring.  I will have to get a couple of those.  We thought about a pad lock, but that scared me a little since I'm always paranoid about a fire and then firemen not being able to get him out.  I worry Embarrassed  But I think the d ring would work great.  Thanks again!

A carabiner will work, but not the ones they sell in places like WalMart, etc.  What you need is an honest to goodness carabiner like what is used for rock climbing. Look in outdoor places like Cabela's and Gander Mountain  for them.
