PS- On a second note, do male dogs not exhibit masturbation for pleasure? That is what I'm feeling is going on, that my female is masturbating through scooting and rubbing.

Are you serious? Shes in pain thats why shes doing this. As far as I know dogs don't masturbate.

I decided to keep away from this since all of you seem to be on some high horse throne toghether, even though you claim this isn't an attack, you all were fast on actually doing so. I'm sure you paint your dog's toenails and knit little sweaters for your fur babies but I had to come back to say to Tiffy ... SERIOUSLY!? Dogs don't masturbate?! What planet are you from where dogs are a higher species and don't have sexual tendencies? C'mon! Monkeys masturbate, pigs masturbate, elephants masturbate,  everything with a sexual organ knows how to stimulate itself! Do you not have the internet or tv? It's all over everywhere... anything you might've said that could've made sense was totally shot out the door with that comment lol.

no sweaters, no foofy stuff for mine -- and the rest of this is silly!  (look at the physicality -- wrong area!!!)

But several of us who *have* allergy dogs took the time to try to answer you.  Gee, thanks for the appreciation.  You're welcome.

A high horse throne. Hmm... no. When I first came to this forum years ago, I was less than a model owner though I was sure I was on the right track with nutrition and training. You know what, though? I READ the advice, did my own research on WHY it was better, changed, and my dogs and myself reaped the rewards.

Knit sweaters and paint toenails? Don't think so, but if for some reason that was appropriate treatment for my dog's ailment, you better believe I'd be doing it. Sorry you don't want to take the time to figure out what is going on with her. What I really gathered from your statements was "It's just a dog." Is that what you're really trying to say? That you think she's just a dirty annoying dog who likes to try to sexually stimulate herself? I think it's a huge leap to assume she's trying to masturbate, especially considering the OTHER behaviors she's showing, like CHEWING HER FEET. Doesn't ITCHY sound a lot more reasonable, or does she have a foot fetish too?

Next time you ask people for advice, put a disclaimer to let them know the world revolves around you and not to challenge your thinking.

    • Gold Top Dog

I think many people have given you great advice regarding your initial problem.  I agree with those who've said that it sounds like an unresolved allergy.  Anal glands can become impacted and require surgery and is excruciatingly painful.... she maybe telling you that it hurts?

Having a male dog who's used at Stud, I can tell you that dogs do not do things simply for the pleasure of it.  He's had bitches literally throwing themselves at him, and if she's not ready or she's already pregnant.... he won't do it.  I don't know why, I can't explain it.  But, I know most human men would do it strictly for the pleasure.  Dogs do it for procreation.  It's amazing to see this, and it's been in multiple cases not just once or twice.

I think you're getting some good advice here, we may not be telling you what you want to hear, but it's a public forum and when you ask a question you're going to get answers.

Keep in mind forums aren't a substitute for a Vet, you may want to get a second opinion from another vet as to what is going on with your girl.  I hope that you both find some answers and some relief soon.

I know she gets pleasure from it or else she wouldn't be so intent on doing it regardless of being punished.
    Any ideas?

Yes it does sound like she is getting pleasure from it.  That is how itchiness works.  You feel the overwhelming urge to scratch the offending area and when you do endorphins are immediately released.  I love a good orgasm as much as the next girl, but I've never needed to have one in public where on the other hand I've had rashes I couldn't stop scratching whether I was talking to a friend or trying to take a shower.

It doesn't seem logical to jump to self satisfaction when she is clearly not a healthy dog.  She has raw areas, she is licking her paws, and she is leaving brown stuff behind her.  Really whens the last time you decided to roll around in the sack and left brown smears all over your bed sheets while doing so?  Yes itching isn't going to help in the long run but she shouldn't be punished for the irresistible desire to do so.  The poor girl needs some relief.

If you're absolutely dead-set on not finding another vet (somebody who actually knows what he/she is doing), then how about some home remedies that might help?

For the anal gland issue (yes, that's what it is) you can try adding a bit of Metamucil to her food every meal.  I'm not sure about amounts, it can vary as to how much it takes to help an individual dog.  Hopefully someone else can give you a starting point.  Also, what dog food does she eat?  It might be tricky finding a high-fiber food that could help with the anal gland issues and not worsen the allergy issues, but I'm sure we can come up with some suggestions.

What I do for my dog with chronic anal gland issues, on a vet's advice, is to feed her oatmeal three or four times a week.  I use the old-fashioned kind, not quick cooking, and feed her enough oatmeal to replace an entire meal.  That alone has worked wonders for my butt-scootin' dawg.

For the allergies (paw licking) -- What have you tried?  Antihistamines?  Which ones and what dosages?  There are many that can be given to dogs, you usually have to try several for a couple of weeks at a time to find the one that works best for an individual dog.  Have you done frequent bathing, as often as every other day?  That washes off the pollens that accumulate on the dog's fur.  If you can't give a full bath, just dipping her paws in a container of warm water or wiping her down with an old damp towel can help.  Have you tried high dose fish oil supplements to help fight inflammation from allergies?  Have your vets suggested allergy testing and desensitization shots?

If you tell us exactly what you've tried for each of these medical conditions, then may be can offer some more suggestions.

BullsEye, I've got to say that you're style of discussion is pretty immature but I understand you feel threatened and defensive.  It's a normal reaction when people are faced with evidence they don't care to examine too closely because it is in direct opposition to what they believe.

I'll make a deal with you for the sake of your dog.  I'll loan you some books if you will promise to read them and to consider what you read with an open mind.  I do believe you care about your dog or you wouldn't have come here asking for ideas.

The first thing that came to mind was yeast infection.  I'd get a second opinion from other vets, too.  Especially if her feet are unresolved 2yrs later.

    • Gold Top Dog

I haven't read all the posts but my initial reaction is that if you have to express anal glands weekly, the "treatment" is not working.  A healthy dog should very rarely, if ever, need their anal glands expressed.  Unfortunately "rear end" issues are somewhat common with GSDs so I have known several dogs that have had everything from persistent anal sac infections to pretty severe anal fistulas.  Both can be excruciating for the dog.  I would be working with a good vet to get to the bottom (pun intended) of this issue for good.

Our vet thinks it's merely physchological, which I agree but I know she gets pleasure from it or else she wouldn't be so intent on doing it regardless of being punished. .

      Welcome to the forum; I disagree with your vet, based on experience with my dog. She used to chew her feet, and often they would be bloody on the bottom from it. She also used to scoot and needed her anal sacs emptied about every 2 weeks to four weeks. She never chews her feet anymore, and rarely scoots or needs her sacs emptied. Her problems were caused by allergies, both food related and environmental. Food allergies made her chew the area under her tail because it would itch, and both environmental and food allergies will cause the anal sacs to flare up and cause itching elsewhere. That may be why your girl is scooting. Has she been tested for environmental allergies? Most vets will send some blood to a laboratory for allergy testing. If you're interested, here's a place that does the testing;

    Bio-Medical Services - Home

     Your vet may know of other places. With her skin being infected ( the rash you mentioned), and her feet and anal area bothering her, allergy testing may be a good idea. Jessie was actually tested by a veterinary dermatologist at a vet teaching school and put on allergen immunotherapy. It has helped her tremendously, but may not be necessary for your dog. Here's what you can try to help her;

Give her fish oil; about 50 to 100 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. For example; if she weighed 50 pounds, she could have 1136 to 2270 milligrams. That's one to two capsules daily. Give her Benedryl too. You can ask your vet for the dose. The fish oil will make the Benedryl more effective.

For the feet; try these;    Amazon.com: Douxo Chlorhexidine 3% PS Pads (30 Count): Kitchen & Dining

They are very effective and won't burn her paws. When Jessie used to have irritated feet, I used a product called MalAcetic wipes, with apple cider vinegar. She would try to pull her feet away and I didn't know why until I accidentally got some into a cut on my finger. It really burned because of the vinegar.

Good luck I hope this helps.

This is a really excellent answer. But I have to say, I'm amused and a bit miffed that you can post that you love a good orgasm, but if I post that my dog has p r i c k ears I get censored. Ah, the logic of auto-censoring programs ;-)

It's really a shame that to OP is unwilling to view this as anything except a discipline problem. I assure y'all that if I ever get time to knit, it will be to produce sweaters for me, not my dogs. And I hate the expression "furbaby". And I wouldn't be caught dead painting my own fingernails, much less the nails of my working stock dogs. But even I could see immediately that this dog has serious medical issues that need to be resolved. It's a real pity that she will probably never get the help she needs. Itchiness is horrible to live with.

everything with a sexual organ knows how to stimulate itself!

Pam Byrnes: I had no idea you could milk a cat!
Greg Focker: Oh, you can milk just about anything with nipples.
Jack Byrnes: [He reacts] I have nipples, Greg, could you milk me?
