What I find interesting about this thread is this: Brad seemed to care enough to reach out to a dog oriented community to seek resolution to a problem that he and his family has inherited.
Yes, he is "ignorant" about dogs in general. No offense, Brad, about the word...but its obvious that you #1 don't know anything about dogs, dog behavior, how to care for a dog, the necessity to train a dog to help the dog understand how to live in a home; and #2 you have reached out to a community of people who "stand" for dogs first. Dogs can't speak for themselves. We, in this community, live and breathe the well-being of dogs in general. Not only our own, but dogs out in the world who need help.
The dog who currently lives at your place is one of these dogs. He needs help. Help that you, your step father or anyone else in your family cannot deal with. And, thats OK. Just please, I beg of you, take the time to find this dog a home in which it can be nurtured, trained and be a part of a family. I believe that because you reached out in search of resolution, that you can do that. I know you were looking for a simple resolution. But, the fact is it takes time and effort. It takes training and love. I don't think its something you or your family wants to do. We have no clue why your step dad brought this dog home; nor does it matter. What matters is that you have now learned that the resolution is not "cookie cutter." Please do the right thing and take the dog to a Non-killl shelter; or perhaps you can reach out to neighbors or friends who may have the bandwidth to take the dog.
BTW, you are insulting and arguing with someone who is a professional dog behaviorist and trainer. Her words trump yours; as well as her educational background.
Sometimes, when one doesn't hear what they want to hear, they get offensive, which is what you have done. Again, this is a community who speaks for dogs first, humans second (sometimes third).
