Not knowing your dog and his temperment, it's hard to say.  I would generally recommend opposite sex but many dogs accept another of the same sex with no issues.   Age would matter to me only if I was considering adopting a much older dog or if the resident dog was a senior.  A senior may or may not appreciate a young, playful Boston. :)   It's always a bit of a crap shoot when you adopt but if your dog is well socialized, then you shouldn't have a problem unless the dog you adopt isn't well socialized.  Good luck!

If you go through a breed specific adoption group, many of them will try to pair you with the best possible match for your lifestyle and current pets. They may be quite a bit more strict then a shelter on who they choose to adopt out to and may even want to do an in home evaluation with a questionnaire. If possible see if your current dog can met the potential new dog. You could start by checking out petfinder and see what groups are in your area. Check out small dog rescues as well, sometimes I see Bostons in their lisings.

Good luck on your search and I hope you the best on adding a new addition to your family!

Generally male - female pairings work best but it doesn't really matter so long as the dogs enjoy each other.

As far as age goes, if it were me I would go with a 1 year old or something close. A 5 year old would be fine too. The reason to space them out is for when they are elderly and needing more vet care. I have 3 dogs who are all basically the same age which is great on one hand because they equal each other in energy. The downside is that I'm going to have some huge vet bills as they all grow old together.
