Are your dogs working as therapy dogs?

Are your dogs working as therapy dogs? What kind of training or testing did your dog have to complete in order to work as a therapy dog? Anyone out there hoping to turn their love-a-bull into a thera-pit?

I answered you on FB (altho I normally never go there) -- both Luna and Tink are actively working therapy dogs, altho not certified yet (we're in the process).  Billy's got his CGC but I'm not working him currently simply because of his history of IMHA and I have to be too careful what he's exposed to.  All of the dogs I have had have done pet therapy.  From nursing homes/alzheimer's facilities to working in hospitals and beyond -- it all depends on what affinity each dog has for the work.

Like Sal, in your other post, Tink had really horrific demodectic mange when we got her -- and we got her TO train for pet therapy.  Once a dog has gone thru the sorts of medicines and the pain/suffering when they have demodex *that* bad, it gives them a far greater affinity for sick children (you can train a dog to accept the smells of sickness but it tends to be easier when the dog has gone thru something similiar themselves).

    Hi,

Thanks for the response.  I'm not sure what IMHA is.  Does Luna or Tink work with children?

I have been very seriously considering it, with Jewel. She certainly has the temperament for it. She loves people, and ADORES children. She's an oversized (16";), sturdy, Italian Greyhound. Very, very sweet natured. If I can get her out enough that I feel comfortable with taking her TDI test and taking her into places, we'll probably do it. I just have to find the time. The training is there. All of my personal dogs can heel, sit, leave food, leave other animals, etc. The test is a souped up CGC, which is totally doable, for her.
