Teaching "quiet" crate manners and seperation anxiety

Echo is really, really attached to me.

She is 5 months, prime time for a fear period.  I crate her at bedtime, she fusses a bit. And then today I crated her for supper and man does she have a set of lungs on her!  I waited it out until she was quiet once we were done eating.

Now if I go out of the house to take trash out- even if she's wandering in the house, it's whine, yip, howl (totally cute, but can be a problem- we need our dogs to be mostly quiet).    So anyway, I realize this is a phase and she'll get over it eventually, in the meantime, any ideas?

I will be signing her up for an obed. class, I have already met the teacher of the classes and she is awesome, all positive motivation.

It's been 8 years since I had a puppy- and that was Darby and she never had sep. anx. issues.

Despite these couple of things, we are really enjoying her :)

This is totally not SA. This is a puppy being a puppy!

Ok, good to know (see how long it's been since I had a pup!?)

It was kindof like a tempertantrum, akin to what my 3 yr old does when she has to do somethign she'd rather not do.

I will continue to work through it.  She got better as I praised her when she was quiet.  Plus we've only had her 48 hours.

She is very good in the house, no accidents, normal puppy chewing/investigating stuff.  Quite a nice girl!

Could she have to go to the bathroom and that's why she is whining? It might not be unless she hasn't been out in a while. Anyway, it takes a while for them to get used to the crate, I think it took Simba about two weeks to realize that he WILL be taken out and not ignored when he's good and quiet. I usually give him something keep him occupied in the crate. Though really he just goes in their for naps/sleep. I usually put peanut butter in a kong and freeze it, keep it handy for when he goes in his crate. Just totally ignore her like you are now when she's whining. Good luck!

Oh a new puppy; my favorite thing in life.

I have a 5 year old smidgen (4 1/2) pounds who is very well behaved but when he sees me getting ready to leave he runs to the front door, jumps up onto the back of the couch (so he can look out the window) and yells bloody murder. It's not SA, it's just a silly habit and he does it whether I have my car keys or just a trash bag and am only outside for about 4 seconds. I was concerned at one time about how long he'd go on doing that. As it turns out he lasts until my car gets out of site and then he's done. Sometimes the others chime in too but none of them go on for very long. I only mention this because if you have someone who barks when you leave it may not be a big deal - if you find out that they aren't doing it for long.

Have fun with the pup. I'm jonesing for a pup. We've been about a year and a half with no pups. Too long for me.

    Pwca

LOL, yes Pwca is right. Apollo had SA and it is U.G.L.Y. Seriously. He broke through windows (glass windows, not screen, he broke those too tho), chewed the front doorknob off, chewed the front and back door and shredded the floor (looked like he tried to get under the door), howled/excessively barked, he would be covered in his own foamy drool, and there's much more he did- that is SA! :) You only had her a day or so, right? So, let her work herself into your routine.
