Clicker training for jealousy and aggression?

Clicker training for jealousy and aggression?

I've got a great dog that listens to everything I say in the house, but as soon as there's other dogs around, it's all about them. I've learned what sets her off in the dog park, e.g. when another owner gives his/her dog attention, my dog simply must get in between.  She's also not a good greeter when she comes into the park, or another dog comes in, especially if there's several dogs at the fence waiting to meet the new dog.  I've watched some youtube videos on clicker training and think it might be the way to go as she loves her treats. I have a basic understanding of how the clicker works, but how can you use it to train a dog not to be jealous when other dogs get attention, or how to not be crazy when she enters the dog park, etc.. It doesn't make sense to train her to sit with me and wait until the dog comes in as other dogs are able to meet and greet without fighting, etc..

Personally, a dog like that does not belong in a dog park. I would never take her back.

Your reply was rather non-constructive and pointless. I'm here because I want to help her and you tell me you'd never take her back? Sorry but I don't give up as easily as you.

I'm sure that my reply will be "non-constructive & pointless" as well, but it doesn't sound like your dog is a good candidate for a dog park.  It's dogs like yours that cause problems, start fights, & in general, give dog parks a bad name.

It is, IMO, very reckless, & disrespectful to take a dog who is overly pushy, & by your own admittance "not a good greeter" to a dog park.  It's just blatant disregard for the safety of both your dog, & of other dog park patron's dogs.

Not every dog is equipped with the skills to have be successful dog park dogs.  There is nothing wrong with those dogs, they just need to be allowed to play with other dogs, if possible, in a controlled setting where they can be set up to be successful.

I have a dog who, even at 8 months of age, does not take crap off of dogs who don't greet her appropriately.  She is great with dogs who meet, greet, & play appropriately, but if a dog is rude, she will put it in check.  I will not expose her to a dog park because I know that there are always idiots there with dogs who have no business in that type of setting, & my dog will feel the need to correct them.  I would just be setting her up to fail, & it's is my job, as a responsible owner, not to let her fail.

Tootsie, my Corgi is not dog park material. Just like Amandas 8 month old, if a dog greets Toots rudely she will not hesitate to put them in their place. There are too many "what if" factors at a dog park. I tend to take the proactive role with my dog.

I haven't had this dog from when she was born. And I disagree that not every dog can be "successful"  Apparently, this was the wrong forum to visit for advice as so far all I've encountered in you two are quitters and that's not me, nor my dog. We will be successful and since I can't rub your face in her dog poo like I feel like doing right now, I will shoot a video of her being well behaved in the dog park, post it, and rub your face in that instead. I know she has a problem and I want to correct it. Instead of encouraging me to help her, I get a "it's dogs like yours" response.

Like I said, I know there's a problem and I stay on her like stink on *edited expletive* in the park. She's never bitten another dog, but she has been bitten twice. I won't be posting here anymore, nor supporting the site and/or its advertisers because of you two and your pointless replies.

I can't see where having to stay on a dog constantly would be fun for you or the dog.  It would be far more reasonable to set up play dates with individual dogs in a controlled enviroment.

Isn't there a rule against this?  I think that it might be referred to as the "Amanda Rule.".......... Yes there is. And that's a good name for it Stick out tongue

*edited expletive*. *edited, rude*. I came on this forum a few years ago and people were a lot nicer. Moderators, consider the demeanor of your forum members and perhaps a "if you can't say something nice or helpful don't say anything at all" rule should be in place.. because you just lost a customer.

Well, that didnt sound very nice or helpful.

The people that replied were just trying to give you advice on your situation. Dog parks are NOT for every dog. If you're dog is having problems at the dog park, then you shouldnt bring her there.. for her own saftey, and the saftey of other dogs/people.

    • Gold Top Dog

I didn't start with them; they started with me. I came on here seeking advice for clicker training specifically with regards to dog park behavior. Maybe their dogs are well behaved, but they certainly aren't. I've sent feedback to the administrators of dog.com. All I was hoping to get was a "go here for this great resource on clicker training" or , "this book helped me" etc.. not, "never take her there again" or "it's dogs like yours" I know it's dogs like mine you *edit, name calling*, that's why I came here seeking help, but all I got was a couple of...

Dax, you may have already left.  But, it takes a certain level of maturity and being able to say this dog just isn't equipped to handle this situation.  It's not a failure or quitting on the dogs/or your part.  It's that some dogs just cannot be in certain places or around certain people etc.  You've got to grow up a little bit and accept that the dog may not be able to be in dog parks.  But, make him/her the best dog he can be with what you can do.

That's what I have to do with Willow.  I try to let her live the best possible life for HER.  It wouldn't be for every dog, but for her, her mind and her situation it is.

I think trying to go for it with clicker training in a dog park isn't going to be too easy or successful.  Because you've got waaay too many distractions there.

    MOD'S NOTE

Stop it. I'm going in and editing, if you get 3 edits you are suspended.... the name calling and back and forth bickering needs to stop.

It's a forum, some people will post helpful info and some less than.  I'm sure there will be some helpful information, but if this keeps up we will never see it as the thread will be locked.
