Crate/Potty training ??

    Crate/Potty training ??

     We are in the process of crate/potty training our puppy and I have a couple of questions.................our puppy is a little girl (9lbs and almost 5 months) I know the standards take the dog out when you get up, after she eats, after she plays, anytime she comes out of the crate...........my questions are;

    When we take her out how long do you leave her out if she's not going (it seems to take her forever)? I know that if she doesn't go you are supposed to put her back in the crate...........how long do you leave them in there before you try again?

    How long do you leave them out to play? At her age how long should she be able to hold it?

    We are feeling frustrated, exhausted with her potty training and we want to get it right but feel we are failing. Any help and ideas would be so appreciated.

    Thanks

     Well I seem to be dealing with a *difficult* pup. We're doing outside to potty, on leash for 15 minutes. Back into the crate for 5 minutes (since he will mess in his crate) then back outside again for another 10 minutes on leash. Repeat if pup still hasn't pottied. Jackson is only 14 weeks old though.

    I do *highly* recommend taking your pup outside on a leash to potty. Make a party out of it when she does. Let her run around and play for a good 5 minutes once she has gone potty.

    how long do you leave her out if she's not going

    You don't leave her out there.  You go out there WITH her.  I would say 5 mins max, and preferably no playing or whathaveyou until AFTER she has Performed.  Playing can get things moving, but then if you have a smart puppy, they soon figure out that peeing is the END of the fun, so I prefer to walk round briskly with them to get things moving instead.  If no joy, I take them inside and crate them (or watch them VERY CLOSELY) and re-try in 10 mins, or sooner if she shows signs.  When she goes, say a cue word AS she goes and then pop a treat in her mouth when she's finished.  Throw a party, tell her how wonderful she is and play a short game, then go back indoors.

    I'm not sure how long she should be able to hold it - she sounds quite small, so ***not very long!!****  In any case, all dogs are individuals and develop control/learn at different rates.  Telling you how long she should be able to hold it for won't help if she still ends up messing in the house.  Don't test it.  If she is having frequent accidents, take her out more often.  If she is getting it right and going n the right place, you are taking her out enough and can gradually start to take her out less often.

    My rule of thumb is, I set a timer to go off every hour on the hour and we go out hen.  I ALSO take them out after eating, drinking, waking etc.  For a very small dog, I'd set that time for every 30 mins (PLUS after eating drinking waking etc) at least for the first few days.  In your shoes, I'd be doing that, until she's back on track.

     When I say leave her out I didn't mean that we just put her out there.......we go with her. We watch her closely. She's not doing to bad............I just want to make sure that I am getting it right with her so she succeeds. Thanks for the advice.

     Tootsie, who is 5, will just wander around , sniff, look at me or even just stand there. As soon as that leash is on she goes within 2 minutes. She knows why shes out there, but quickly finds something cooler to do or just moseys around. The leash is your friend.
