    Newbie to the clicker

So I FINALLY got a darn clicker. I've never used one before so does anyone have any advice they can give? Thanks in advance! :)

There's a neat web site for free lessons at: www.clickerlessons.com and you can watch videos here: www.clickertrainusa.com.

Good beginner book: Peggy Tillman's "Clicking With Your Dog"

The clicker is NOT used as a cue or as a reward.  It merely marks a behavior you like.  It is a way to tell the dog "you did that right, your reward is on the way".

Spend time charging it first.  Get a handful of treats and just click-treat, click-treat, click-treat.  When you click - PAUSE, and he looks expectantly at you for his treat, then you're good to go Smile  I think it's good to start with an attention exercise, like getting the dog to look at you when you say his name, or teaching a cue like "watch me".

Spirit Dogs: Thanks! I'll check out those websites and see if I can find that book. :)

Chuffy: Thanks! I'll practice doing that with him later. :)

the links spiritdogs suggested are great. Also check out dogmantics, there's lots of great videos on there. My next 'obstacle' with zoey that I need to clicker train is being behaved when other dogs are next to her crate. She has meltdowns.

HOpe you enjoy it, always remember to click before the treat! you'll have yourself trained in no time. In Zoey's puppy class we use a verbal marker, it works ok. but you should see her when she hears that click, her little head whips around to say 'oh yay a treat!' that doesn't really happen with the verbal marker as well because of vocal variations. I feel like the click is more precise, so you can really capture the behavior you like. also remember that a click will often end a behavior, dont worry as long as you click simba right when he's doing what you like.

the first things I stared clicking zoey on were sit, crate and lay down. Also I worked on the eye contact, making a kissy sound & clicking her as soon as she looked at me.

pretty soon You'll be like me, crazy puppy lady with a clicker in  hand and treats on my hip LOL

oh i wanna suggest this, cuz it was one of my first questions about clicker training.

    when do you stop C/T?

once simba has something down 100% or even 90%, start asking for that behavior a little more, maybe he has to sit twice to get a click, or he has to look at you for 2 seconds before he gets a click, then 3 etc.. but throw a onesy in there every once in awhile. and jackpots - thats when he does something really well ( or just cuz you feel like it) and after his click you give him a bunch of treats. Its like a slot machine, he's gonna keep playing for that once in awhile big payoff.

but ya, you work up to longer and longer behaviors, eventually fading the C/T out. there are alot of things I still click Zoey for 100% of the time, because i really want to cement it in her little puppy brain - and thats usually recalls and loose leash walking.

I also wanted to add that I use certain treats for certain degrees of difficulty so in the house she'll get - dog food or chopped up soft treats ( mostly dog food though), when i started loose leash walking it was lunch meat, then dried liver/soft treats, and now she'll do it for cheerios and dog food.  With the cars I used lunchmeat & hot dogs in the beginning, and now we're down to soft treats/dried liver/cheerios. My trainer also uses string cheese as a reward - depending on the pups tummy.  you can also mix in praise as a treat or ear rubs, whatever he enjoys and will work for.

So if you're asking him something difficult or in a highly distracted environment use a high value treat to keep his attention, when he gets more proficient, you can go down a level on treats.

any news? I'm excited to see if this 'clicks' lol with Simba!

Hey! I've practice a little bit with him. :D I've been doing the click and treat with him and he seems to be getting it. I'll probably try doing the whole clicker thing for some new tricks like leg weaving and 'under' my leg with him. Thanks for all the info hun!

Edit: Oh! I've also been teaching him the 'look at me'.

awesome! I was teaching Zoey to touch a target - a post it note stuck to the cabinet, last night. I want to teach her how to close doors LOL. it was neat seeing her little puppy brain try & figure out what to do to make the click happen!! I also started teaching her roll over LOL.
