    Anyone tried this?

funny... had the youtube website up, randomly browsing, walked off to get clothes out of the washer... came back to find that one of my kids clicked on this..

anyway, i watched it and wanted to know if anyone has tried this method or a variation of it or maybe know a better way.

I train stay very similarly.  We first work very closely, & I do teach duration first.  Once the dog can hold a stay, while I am standing next to them, for 5 minutes, then we move to staying with distance.

I don't correct a broken stay by putting my hands on the dog or by getting in their face.  I work them on leash, & if/when they break stay, I say "wrong" & I just gather them up, & return them to do it again.  This time, I ask for a short stay, & reward for it quickly.

I always work my dogs up slowly, duration wise.  With Cher, I started her with the goal of a 5 second stay to earn her reward.  Every time that she was successful, I increased out duration time by 5 seconds.  If she broke stay, then I would reduce the stay time by 10 seconds.  It's time consuming, & a bit tedious, but she can now hold her stay for my required 5 minutes, & we are working on distance now.

I agree with bevo, thats what I'm doing with Zoey, I add in me as a distraction also - like me hopping on one foot, or running across the kitchen. even stepping over her or going behind her - she just turns her head most of the time. If she breaks her stay, I just ignore her - she gets it cuz she looks at me like 'where's my treat, oh, you didn't want me to run over to you, ok'

I worked this similarly, but not quite, I never put my hands on the dog if they broke the stay. I did however physically block Luke by getting in front of him if he tried to break the stay. I just stepped into his path, and had him sit again. Also, in addition to distance and duration, I have worked distraction. I got the crate games dvd by Susan Garrett (which I love and need to dig out to lend to a friend). Anyway, I think that was helpful, and a lot of the work on distraction we did in the crate. I think you need to work on distraction in addition to these if you want success in an emergency situation. If you want him to stay when a cat runs across, or mine would chase  a leaf, those are distractions, and you need to teach that as well.

Crate games is awesome stuff if you get the chance to teach it properly!!! I use it with my girls (although I need to brush up on it!) and it really teaches soooo much, especially in the line of impulse control. It's also a great way to teach a dog to love its crate!!
