Bark Limiter G3

 Is it charged?  How does it turn on?

I put it on her pretty snug and opened the slider to the patio. Then I went about my business doing laundry, etc., ignoring her, hoping she would go on the patio and bark at something...... She doesn't "speak" when instructed and I wouldn't do that and then have her be shocked anyway. I need to be able to see her reaction when it happens, and I won't just leave it on her and leave the house without knowing how it's going to affect her.

They sent me two collars - I only paid for one, which seems weird - maybe it was an oversight. There was no invoice in the box. I'll try the other one and see if that works on me. Since I only have 7 days to return the item, if I don't get some action soon, I'm sending them back.

I have no experience with these collars, but maybe you wernt "barking" loud enough? How is the bark detected? Is it through the vibration form the vocal cords or is it from the bark noise itself? Maybe your vocal cords arnt moving enough to turn on the stim?

Did you order directly from Tri-Tronics, or a third party?  Tri-Tronics' Customer Service # is 800-456-4343.  You have a 30-day money-back guarantee from Tri-Tronics, so the 7-day thing makes me wonder if you got the collar from another party?

Humming loudly will generally set them off, too, if it's working and correctly positioned.  Look at the collar in this image - note where the sensor is located btwn the contact points - your vibration needs to occur there.  http://www.tritronics.com/BarkLimiterintro.asp 

They may have sent you the dummy collar, which would explain it not working, but I'm pretty sure that one doesn't light up.  (I could be wrong) Their Customer Service is open right now and they can walk you through it.  **Make sure you turn it back down before you start testing on yourself again. lol**

Did you check to see if the battery had plastic between it and the devise.  Sometimes when batteries are already installed they will do this and the buyer has to remove them.

Its a pretty common thing to put the collar on yourself first. Without doing it you have no idea what the dog is feeling. If I was going to use an e collar, I would never use it without testing it on myself first, so I know exactly what the dog would be feeling.

Exactly what I was thinking.  Check the other collar and see if that one works.

Yep, I test mine on my hand before *every* time I put it on the dog.  I want to make sure it's set correctly and that it's working.  The Boost dial on my remote is very easy to move so I don't want to shock the dog too much if the dial got bumped.  When my collar is working and set correctly, it feels like a faint tickle on my hand, I have to concentrate to feel it, but this is the "working level" for the dog who wears it.

A little unrelated, but just curious Liesje...does this mean you decided to go with an ecollar to continue your work with Nikon?? I remember taking part in the thread when you were considering it, but never heard afterwards on your decision. I'm curious, and if you did how it's going for you!

Nope, decided against it for him.  For one, I cannot afford the one I would need, nor the proper imprinting training to go with it.  We have no problems with our current methods and philosophies so I've decided it's just not worth it.  It won't really help me any and could just cause other problems.  I'm not against the collars, but I always want to use the best tool for the dog in each circumstance and so far we have no reason to switch to R- with him.

I used one on Coke using P+ because of some safety issues.  He was digging under the fence to go after rabbits.  Basically we used it the same way an e-fence collar works.  Rather than having him obsess over rabbits and constantly try to dig under the fence (which I can keep fixing and reinforcing but it doesn't stop him from being obsessive about it) we used the e-collar for a few weeks.  Now I have been going out with him for extended periods and he no longer wears it, is more interested in playing than getting out.  I can't say quite yet if he's sufficiently proofed but it appears like it.  He no longer claws obsessively at the fence.  I want him to be able to be outside with me and the other dogs so he can play and not be totally obsessed with one spot along the fence.

I was able to position it correctly on me and, yeah, it works!!! It's the same stim as the stim machine I have for my back. I only tried it on level 1, tomorrow I'll see how level 2 is. Most importantly, I need to position it correctly on Abbie.... I think I had it too high on her, like I did on me. Starting tomorrow I'll have her wear it whenever I'm home, unless we're sleeping and I'll keep the doors and windows open hoping something will make her bark. I really need to see her reaction to it so I can assess which level to have it on. Since she doesn't bark often, especially when I'm home, it's going to be interesting. Geez, I never thought I'd actually *want* my dog to bark!!!

You could always "set her up".  Go through everything you usually do before leaving, walk out the door and hang out outside to see if she barks.  Only problem is, you won't actually see her reaction to the collar.  But, if she keeps barking, you'll know it's set too low.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Maybe, ask a friend to walk their dog outside of your house near a window, so you can see her reaction to the collar?
