No Bark Collar

    No Bark Collar

I am curious if anyone has used a no bark collar to get their dog to stop barking in its crate when you're still in the room?  I go to agility class/trials and if I'm not right next to the crate, Kota barks like crazy.  bleh....  I thought about trying a citronella collar but if he's in a crate, then he can't get away from the smell... and at agility trials, it's pretty crowded sometimes....

I've tried rewarding him when he's quiet by going back to his crate to drop in treats but it hasn't helped any.  He does have mild seperation anxiety and I feel like the barking is part of that.  He barks regardless if Tasha is in the crate with him or not.  It's worse when I take her out to work her though.  As long as someone he knows is near the crate, he's quiet, but if not, ugh!

At agility class yesterday I remembered why classes are not as much fun as they could be.... or at least, why I took only one dog at a time for a while....

Sure, I've used one under similar conditions and know many others that use one in the same circumstance.

Did you use a citronella collar?  Or another kind?

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear.  I used an electric bark collar.  I used it on some of my Labs when we were training.  They would drive me and everyone else insane with their barking and they couldn't even see the action but they knew why we were out in the country. LOL  At AKC Hunt Tests its not allowed to have any sort of training device on a dog.  In a flyball class I took once the instructors always had their dogs in crates up against a wall (inside a building) and the barking was absolutely maddening.  When I was doing two dogs in agility I would get my DH to come to class so he could hold one dog on lead.

BTW, I have never tried the citronella collars.

I use a no bark citronella collar on Benny.  It works to an extent.  However, if gets himself super worked up he has been known to bark right through it.  We are also doing agility and any time I put him in a crate at the facility he barks non stop.  I have used the collar on him in the crate with some success though. It might be worth a try.

Hello =) We have a maltese that barks at everyone who visits us. We decided to try a high pitch anti-bark dog collar and I must say that most of the time it is effective, because every time our dog barks, attention is diverted to the high pitch beep. We use the collar only when we have visits, otherwise we don't put that thing around dogs neck. It might not work on every dog but it's quite succesful for us and the most important thing is, it's not harmful and doesn't cause any pain. We haven't tryed the citronella collar, because it is a bit large for our dog but my friend told me, that it's efficient. But avoid shock collars, they are inhumane and they cause pain. Cheers

I have used electronic bark collars on multiple dogs for various situations. They work very well and I'd suggest them over citronella or sonic bark collars. Before I decided on which type to buy I asked multiple people about their citronella collars and none of them were totally happy with them. Malfunctions see common with them, namely that they will sometimes get "stuck" and empty the entire canister. One of my friends had and returned one multiple times and never ended up getting one that would properly function long term. Also dogs standing near the barking dog tend to get corrected as well and it is a correction that last quite a lot longer than the static shock. So I bought electronic bark collars and have been pretty pleased with the Innotek one but the Petsafe ones, not so much. The Petsafe ones require a proprietary battery and the collars only worked maybe a year (in that year the batteries were replaced multiple times). The Innoteks lasted many years and you can buy the battery for them at Radio Shack. The dogs learn very quickly to be quiet when the collar is on. I have tried sonic bark collars and sonic freestanding no-bark units and they pretty much had no effect on my dogs. I think your dog would have to be extremely soft for one of those to work for any period of time.

I've not used the one triggered by their barking but I have used a handheld remote one for the same purpose. From inside the house to corrects inappropriate barking outside. I have never had to correct more than a few times because I can time it just right and couple it with a voice command. Soon the command is all that's needed.

I believe the one's I use have been from Innotek. Amazon usually has decent prices, stock up on batteries or get a rechargable unit...they don't last long!

This thread is from 2008!  lol... I have given up on the whole barking in the crate and since now he's retired, there's no point.

Our Quinn is a big barker. In field work it is IMPERATIVE the dogs run silent. So we were told very early to get her a bark collar. You do want the ones triggered by the bark itself. If you use a remote one, by the time you have hit the button, you are correcting perhaps the non bark timing and timing is everything. What size you need for your dog, that I can not answer, they do have collars for smaller dogs. I got my collar at Cabela's, it is by Sport Dog, it is rechargeable, and it increases in intensity if your dog does not stop barking. Now if we put it on Quinn, she does not start barking.

She also doesn't need it at events, or new places as she used to she knows she is not to bark. Barking for a performance dog can be so frustrating. In 2008 I wouldn't have had an answer. A lot of people do not realize how barking first wears the dog down, and also completely reduces their brain to mush. I am getting into conversations with dock jumping folk. I am getting I don't care for the events because handlers just leave their dogs barking their fool heads off in their crates thinking no one cares... I CARE!!! I hate the noise. My dogs do not bark, and if they do the collar goes on. I would rather they relax in their crates. These folks don't even cover them. One woman's dog started barking I asked if I could cover it (she had a cover) she said sure but it won't stop it. It did.

I do know if you go to sites like TriTronic, Innotek, SportDog you may find less intense collars that may help your dog. Often after a few days you don't need it as much. Good luck.
