How do I get her attention? *Update!!*

Tonight will be Brianna's 4th training class. Last week I couldn't get her to look at me unless we were in motion. Then she was wonderful. But I couldn't get her to listen to me once we stopped moving, even if she was looking at me.

When we're off to the side working on whatever, she's either standing or sitting next to me looking outward. Even when I got in front of her, she would just move so she could see the rest of the class. She was very calmly just watching everything else. Yummy stinky treats and toys meant nothing to her.

I've been working on her in the front yard multiple times a day for the past week and am slowly making progress. 1 out of 4 tries I'll get a 'watch' or a 'sit' from her.

Anyone have any ideas as to what else I can do? I really am dreading walking into that class again tonight and having my dog just ignore me.

I work on this with all of my dogs. Whenever they look at me, even if it is a glance I say YES! (or use a clicker) and give them a treat. Practice that a while and the dog will understand that looking at you gets it a treat.

She knows and understands 'watch' at home. Its only when we're out that she's like this, and treats mean nothing to her outside the home...

What are you using for treats in class?  You have to up the anty WAY HIGH for class -- which means you can't expect the same treats you use at home to work in a busy, distracting environment like a group class.  Try to find something that she goes absolutely ga-ga for and save it ONLY for class.  Odds are that a manufactured treat probably isn't going to be enough.  Cheese, steak, chicken, liver, etc. are all worth trying.  Don't give it to her at home, only bring it out in class.

Plus you need to practice with her outside of your home environment. Pet stores, play grounds, out on walks, etc. Also, I don't put a cue like watch me during those times. I'm just rewarding for my dogs actually acknowledging my prescence by themselves without my asking for it. That creates a habit for the dog to check in with you all the time.

With a dog that is easily distracted, use the smelliest treats you can find.  Also, however much you are treating her, double it.  I noticed this while watching my husband with our younger dog who is very easily distracted in class.  Our dog initially needs to receive treats every 2-3 seconds.  Even five seconds without being encouraged and rewarded means he will look away or even try to walk away.  With him I use really smelly treats in tiny bits, like pea sized.  So even getting a treat every few seconds amounts to maybe 1/4 cup of food.  When we practice things like heeling I literally hold food on his nose and let him nibble as we go.  Once he understands the concept, he receives a treat every 1-2 steps, then 3-5 steps, etc. until eventually he will heel patterns only being lured and just receiving a jackpot treat at the end.  It takes time but I've found with him if I start with HUNDREDS of treats, he actually catches on rather quickly, rather than using too few treats and constantly having to start over b/c he won't focus.

I've tried spiritdogs liver brownies, string cheese, hot dogs, McD's chicken nuggets, McD's cheeseburger, bits of roast beef.

In the house she has high food drive, outside the home, nothing...

The few times she did take treats in the front yard, I was ready to jackpot her with an entire handful of treats, she turned away after maybe 2 treats.

Maybe something stinkier?  I took Coke to a new club last month and he was totally distracted.  My breeder gave me the stinkiest treat I have ever smelled and after that, all I had to do was rub a little on my hand!  I need to find out what treats those were so I can get some more.  I think it was a "fish" something.

We made some more progress tonight!!! So it is doable its just going to take more time then anyone could have figured.

I managed to a few sits and watch me's. She took some treats. I'm happy.

I did give her an eyedropper full of rescue remedy 2 hours before the class. I don't know how long that dose is supposed to last for.
