mudpuppy, you are quite right, but my caveat is that most people don't have the expertise to train a dog to stay for three minutes in their living rooms, never mind on a mat at the local Starbucks LOL. And, it still doesn't address the problem of theft, although many herders would nip the thief, rather than be taken willingly by a stranger. Herders are designed to work among livestock that never threaten them by grabbing their collars, LOL. I would not risk a bite to a child, or theft, or trauma to the dog. No one has mentioned what happens if the leash comes untied, or the snap breaks... So, for all the lurkers, if you are a dedicated trainer, take mudpuppy's advice (herding dogs need a job anyway) and learn to tell your dog to "go to place" or "go to mat", but then take a friend to Starbucks to watch him anyway
