How many Kongs a day do you feed your dog? filled with goodies?

ConfusedHello new here, and happy to be here what a wonderful place... But i was wondering i put yougurt and kibble in freezer for my little 5 month old and he loves it keeps him busy with that teething for awhile (actually dont know if it is teething or just loving the  yougurt) but anyway i give it to him 2 x a day and wondering if to much is bad for him. Although only a little goes in the med. kong after it is filled with kibble. Thanks alot Julie and Chance...

My dogs get kongs twice a day. I don't fill it with yogurt though - yogurt gives my husky the runs. So, I typically fill it with Natural Balance food roll pieces or peanut butter mixed with kibble or other little treats I have around the house. I don't think 2x per day is bad as long as you reduce the food the dog gets at normal meal times so it won't get over weight.

My guy prefers raw bones to a kong.  But he does get a kong several times a week.

Bugsy gets kongs but I never fill them I put stuff in that is super hard to get out and keep him occupied that way.  I have filled them but he is a monster and chomps on it (yes even frozen) and winds up squeezing all the stuff out.

As it is he sometimes chooses to take a little longer to remove what I've put in and other times just chomps it and crushes whatever is in it

We just had some friends with their lab here and I gave them both kongs with a little NB food roll and half of a large milkbone to block the hole.  The lab couldn't get the biscuit out and their owners laughed out loud when the saw it took Bugs 2 seconds.

He gets a kong after breakfast and one after dinner.  If we go out he gets one in the evening and if he's driving us nuts when we have company he gets one!  All combined isn't the same as filling one.

My dogs actually eat their meals out of their Kongs, so the Kong is instead of and not in addition to their regular food. One meal a day at least is out of a Kong.

mine eat their meals out of kongs at least three times a week. I never give "goodies" or "snacks" except as training rewards. A skinny dog is more likely to be a healthy dog.

I don't really use them *hides*

Kenya doesn't really care for them, she's not real food motivated.  Plus, she eats raw eggs and nasty fish so I have a bowl that's very easy to clean each time.  Cleaning raw egg and fish kaka out of the kong after every meal would be a nightmare!!

Sometimes I give one to Coke when he is bored and pestering me, but I use his normal kibble.  Kenya eats one meal a day, all at once, but Coke I feed half a meal, and then use the rest for training treats or in the kong if he needs it.  If not, he gets the remainder of his daily ration later at night.

Most often I feed Rascal's normal kibble out of his kong. Since it's just his normal food, I just subtract whatever's in the kong from what I feed him at his other mealtimes. There have been a few days where I was gone a lot or had to lock him him a lot (like when I was getting new floors put in) where I gave him 3 kongs. But they were each 90% kibble and 10% bread/veggies.

Another trick with my little guy is to take a really hard treat, like some home-made chicken jerky or something, and really wedge it in there. It takes him forever to get it out and he loves gnawing on it.

The only thing you have to be careful of is if you're feeding treats as more than 20-30% of your dog's diet you could be getting yourself into trouble nutritionally because your dog won't be getting all the nutrients he needs. As long as you're staying below that you should be fine. If you're worried, just put the dog food in your mix :)

Edited to add: it took Rascal about a month of having kongs 3+ times a week to really catch on to them. At first he was like, "You want me to WORK for my food? You've got to be kidding me!" but eventually he came around, and now he really looks forward to getting his :)
