Taking puppies out at night

we used the same schedule as classycairn stated.
one hour for every month plus one hour.
with talus, we woke him up to go out and just kept extending it.
we only had one pee accident in the house the first week we brought him home and had no accidents along the way after that. it worked for us.

OK, I'll be honest. When I have a single pup I put the crate beside my bed.  When puppy whimpers in the nite, I put my fingers through the door and sooth.  If that works, we both go back to sleep, if it doesn't we get up and go potty.  I don't set an alarm and I don't wake either of us up.

With a litter, I set them up in an ex pen with a potty area and let them potty there at nite.  I'm getting too old to give up sleep that I don't HAVE to give up!!

The method your applying sounds as it should be.  Keeping a pup on schedule is the primary way to housebreak a dog.  Depending on the pups age, the only way to test whether an early morning (3AM) is needed is to skip it and see what happenes at 6 am.  If the puppy can go from 11 ;pm till 6 am with no problems, then continue your schedule as is with exception of the 3 am outting.  I have 4 adult border collies and one 8 week old BC pup...and all my BCs are on the same schedule from the day I got them.

My puppy ( a Lab) was sleeping pretty much through the night(8-9 hours) by the time she was about 10 or 11 weeks old. After about the first week I had her ( I got her when she was 8 weeks so she would be 9 weeks by then) she didn't have to get up at 3:30 anymore, but just anytime from 5:30 to 7:30. I let her wake me up, she would whine in her crate, and I would let her out. I never woke her up, just let her tell me. Also, a lot of people would get up earlier than usual for their puppy, becuase it wants to get up. What I mean is, I take her out when she needs to, and I put her back to bed until it's time to get up, when I usually wake up in the morning. Sometimes she would fuss for a little bit, but I ignored her ( since she's just been out). So I put her to bed even if it's only about 1/2 hour, so that she gets used to getting up at 'my' time. If the puppy doesn't 'have' to get up, make them stay in there until you get up; otherwise they might learn to be able to wake up for the morning anytime they wanted to, however early that may be. Just a tip I have [:)] Hope this makes some sense!

withing a week of  when i got my pup he was able to acually go 6 hours when I got him at 8 weeks old.  What I did was I took the water away from him 2 1/2 hours before I put him in the crate for the evening, this way by the time we went to bed he was "dry" or that was what my trainer called it.

I've had great luck with my pup who has been sleeping through the night since about 12 weeks or so.  She's really active during the day and gets lots of excercise and once or twice she's gone to bed before 10 and not woken up to go out until after 7.  Freaked me out and I actually woke up those nights wondering if I should take her out but I let her sleep (must have been during growth spurts?).  I work nights so when I do work, anywhere from 2-4 nights a week, she wakes up when I get home and I take her out then.  On the nights I don't work, she sleeps all the way through.  Me, I never sleep.[;)]  She doesn't get crated during the day all that much since I'm home with a preschooler, just when we go somewhere that she can't go or when she needs a nap.  She plays in and out of it all day and NEVER fusses at bedtime.  My theory on crates, not that anyone asked, is that it is what you make of it.  Used too much, your pup will let you know.  Used appropriately, your pup will let you know. Sounds like you're doing a great job all around.  I'll reiterate what I've seen on here many times with new members - pictures are required!
