    Problem Housebreaking Older Dogs

    Hello,

I have two dogs, both basset hound - lab mixes, brother and sister adopted almost one year ago from the pound.  They are both almost eight.  One male (Theo) and one female (Rudy).  They are both neutered.

We recently began allowing our dogs into the living room after they proved to us that they were not going to mess on the carpet.  They had previously been locked in the kitchen or outside.  Well, Rudy does not seem to know the difference between carpet and grass!!  She pees on the carpet almost every time we let them in the living room.  We always take them out before they are allowed in the living room, but inevidably Rudy will pee on the carpet!  I've tried all the tricks I know to housebreak her.  I've never had to housebreak older dogs before; I've always raised dogs from puppies.

Is she a lost cause as far as housebreaking?  I really want my dogs to be able to spend time in the house with me, but I also don't want to have to replace my carpet!!!  Has anyone faced this problem before?  If so what did you do??

Hi and welcome to i-dog, dogs don't generalize so because Rudy was never allowed in the living room she doesn't know she can't pee there, she is not a lost cause both of my dogs were not housebroken when I got them and it took me one week for one and two for the other. You need to go back to housetraining 101 w/ her, and make sure you clean that carpet w/ something like petastic or you are going to have the male peeing over hers.
Housetraining older dogs is exactly the same as puppies except they will probably learn more quickly, and have bigger bladders so they can hold it longer.
my website has a pretty easy way to house train them if you care to look at it it's www.brandoandtrixiethepapillions.com

This is just an idea, I dont know if it'l lwork or not.  But what if you put a piece of rug in the kitchen area, where they've learned not to pee, and since the rug will resemble carpet, they might eventually learn not to pee on carpet too?
