Training collar?

I always teach loose leash walking inside the house. There are no distractions there and even if you can only go 10 steps in any direction that's enough to start with.

The way I do it is very simple. I put on the leash with the dog inches away from me and give her a treat instantly. I do that a couple of times then take a step. Treat. Take two steps. Treat. Most puppies will follow you if you have treats so it's easy to do this way. I say "Let's go" and I take more and more steps between treats. The only trick is that the leash HAS to have some slack in it or the pup gets no treat until she comes close enough to create the slack.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; I really wish all  these kind of "training aids" were melted down and fashioned into a to scale statue of Sir Cliff Richard.

Used wrong they can cause sooooo much damage, physically and emotionally.  And what it does to the dog/owner bond - don't even get me started.

People may argue that its OK if you have a trainer to guide you.... but anyone can be a trainer these days!  Some of them offer downright cruel and dangerous misinformation.  Unfortunately owners trust them and don't follow their gut, thinking they are ignorant and soft and the trainer knows what he is doing and wouldn't so it if it was harmful..... If only that were true!!!

ETA - bunni are you stalking me????  And reading my mind????  Best way to lead train a puppy, end of.  I'm not even going to say "IMO" because I believe it's a fact.  Only difference is I start indoors without even a lead and when I add it I put one end in my pocket or let it drag.  That way you are not tempted to pull on it and the onus is on you to really motivate the dog. I'll do this in various parts of the house and garden and get it down pat before going outside for a walk

Oh gracious, this pup is just a baby and just learning about the world.  When I leash train a litter of foster pups at first I go where ever THEY want to go and gradually add in some training treats and LOTS of chatter to get them to go where I want to go.  And I always give them some time to explore and not stay right beside me.  If you are FASCINATING enough, well, they want to stay right next to you so they don't miss something.  Anyone who sees me walking my dogs likely thinks I'm nuts because the dogs and I carry on rather extensive conversations....and they don't argue!  They think I'm fascinating and that works wonders.

I think it is wise to expose yourself to a variety of training philosophies.  Most trainers swear that their method is the best and that all other methods are inferior, so don't let that bias your thinking.  Do some research and decide what is best for you and your dog.

I don't have the experience some of the people on this board have.  I am certainly not a trainer.  I have trained a few dogs, with the help of a trainer, but I am, in no way, shape or form, an expert.  In my training experience, I have always trained with a training (choke) collar, EXCEPT WHEN TRAINING A PUPPY.

"Ultimate Puppy Toolkit" (www.premierpet.com) is a great resource for any new puppy owner.  I would try to find a good positive trainer in your area and enroll in puppy class right away.  Don't wait - pups need interaction with others during this critical period of development.  (Google on "puppy stages of development")
