When your puppy was at the breeder (or wherever you got him), he slept at night there, too. Sure if you wake him up and toss a ball, he'll play, but dogs aren't nocturnal. If you keep it dark like someone else said, and only take him out, let him do his business and take him right back into his crate, he'll go back to bed.
My puppy could sleep 7 hours overnight at 9 weeks old. He sleeps in his crate in our bedroom and he sleeps when we sleep. If for any reason he had to go in the middle of the night, he would whine and we'd get up to take him out, but we'd all go right back to sleep after. A puppy can hold his bladder longer when he's just sleeping. Playing and handling will obviously move the bladder and put pressure on other organs and make him go more often.
