Will she ever learn?

    Will she ever learn?

I have a nine month old JR.  She is very smart!  I have been working really hard to get her house broken.  We put her in a crate when we are not home, and she has not had an accident in several months.  However, it is a different story for the house.  She has her "hot spots", regardless of what I clean them with, she goes right back again.  If any thing is left on the floor, she has to go on it.  I can't figure it out.  I have given her treats, and praised her when she goes outside.  Does any one have any sugestions?  I need help, it is driving us crazy!

    Thanks!

It took me 11 months to housetrain Emma (she was 13 months old). She was not my first dog. I know how to housetrain a dog, but she... is a pain in the butt:) My best recomendation is to put a leash on your dog and don't let her out of your sight. Ever. If you aren't watching her, she's crated. When she's not crated, she's leashed, or outside, with you. I tried the basic take her out every thirty minutes, normal potty training routine, and it didn't work. I had to stay on top of Emma, constantly, and catch her BEFORE she pottied, rush her out, and praise her heavily for going outside, each time.

I'm about to do the same with my Dachshund, who I've had for 6 months (got her as an adult, and she knows to go out, but hasn't figured out how to ask yet).

I agree with Jennie.  You have to stay on top of her every second that she is out of that crate.  Everytime she goes in the house it just enforces that it is ok.  I have figured out that for every accident in the house we are set back from reliability by another week.

Thanks!  Jennie, it sounds like we have the same dog.  Kenda can be a pain in the butt.  I have not tried the leash in the house.  I will give it a whirl.  It sounds like it will work.  She seems to not know how to ask to go out. Should I try to figure some way for her to tell us that she needs to go out?  Or just let her find a way to tell us  She is very hard headed!

You need to clean the spots with an enzyme destroyer, like Petastics.  And, you need to limit her access to the places she is peeing, just like everyone else has said.

It's good that she has figured out not to go in the crate.  But, ikf she is still going in the house, in addition to cleaning the spots as Glenda suggests, you must limit her freedom.  Tether her to you, so that if she starts sniffing or circling, you can take her right out.  Do NOT scold her if you catch her squatting, just say uh-uh and "outside?" and take her out.  If you scold, she will not want to pee in front of you, so you'll end up waiting and waiting when she's outdoors, only to have her sneak off to one of her "spots" once inside. Thanks guys,
We have been keeping her close and she has been having a good couple of days.  Can I use the enzyme cleaner on hardwood floors??  The people before us had dogs and I don't think they ever were able to house train their dogs.  They were an eldery couple.  If I can't use an enzyme cleaner, what can I use?

Yes you can. I have all hardwood floors and this is what I use. From everything i've read if you don't use the right cleaner they keep going back to the same spot because it attracts them. Most bottles also recomend leaving it on the area to dry to get the smell completly out.

I also sprayed a lot of the dogs blackets and put them in the wash often the first month because many books indicate that even a small portion of the pee can made the dog want to go back to it. Good luck!

Edited to add also that if other people let there dogs go on the floor in your place and did no clean it properly this is probably why your having such issues. The dog will be able to smell it even if it was a long time ago. If you don't have to much surface to go I would go over the floors in each room if possible. (It would be very expensive if you like in a big enough place)
