    Help!!

I got my puppy bubbles 1 month ago. She was 6 months at the time. She's a wheaton terrier. The issue that I am having is that she constantly seems to have the runs. We started her on the bag of food she came with Puppy Pro Pac. couldnt find that locally so switched to eukenuba. She didnt seem to like that. Dog obedience recommended against it. I then switched 7/1 to Wellness they didnt have puppy formual they suggested lamb. She had wicked runs for days. I've called the vet they suggested hamburger and rice which we did. It seemed to get better Sunday 7/9. We are trying to get her on wellness puppy chicken as the vet said no lamb. Yesterday and today we did hamburger rice mixed with cup of Wellness puppy chicken and she's back to having the runs today. I"m kinda upset the Vet says to not feed her for 12hrs but our normal schedule is to do the last feeding at 5/6 pm and then on wake up at 5/6 am. So its pretty close to the 12hrs. I'd like to keep her on this food but i dont know if its the food or the switching. Any ideas are welcomed

Whoa whoa whoa! If your dog is having tummy problems the last thing you do is add something like hamburger meat, I cant beleive they told you to do that, what crazies!
She needs a clean bland diet, and the first dog food you had her on is like feeding humans a diet of cheeto's....that poor baby. All that switching around is reacking havoc on her tummy. A lot of vets reccomend what they sell in their office. My dog Rory is the same way, she cant even have one lonely freench fry or she poops all the way to China. The Lamb has proven to be way to rich for her tummy. After a lot of failed attempts we found that Nutro-Natural Choice Chicken, Rice and Oatmeal for Sensitive Stomachs is the only thing that makes her happy. At this point it wont help to try, give her several days to adjust and please dont feed her any human food. Good luck and keep us posted

Wellness gives my setter the turbo-poops. That's just a fact.  After trying several kinds of  foods, she did best on Canidae P.A.W.S.  [:D]

Do you think i should take her off the Wellness? She is pooping pure liquid at this point. Im hesitant because i dont want to switch her unnecessarily again. How many products did you try?

    thanks

Um, why WOULD you continue to keep her on this food? It dosnt make any sense. The logical thing would be to put her on a diet that specifies for sensitive tummies. You cant expect her to retain any vitmanins if the food is passing through her so fast which could lead to coat, liver, and many more problems. Nothing rich, nothing would by-products, NO GROCERY STORE FOODS. After you get her settled on some better food you can start to add some fresh veggis and fruits

You can support the gut with lactobacillus tablets.  These are the same active bacteria in yogurt.  One pill prior to each meal.  It is available from the pharmasist over the counter.  You must ask for it because it is refrigerated.  Talk to your vet and rule out any parasites or infection as well.

I think your vet is giving you some good advice, assuming she told you to boil the hamburger.  You wouldn't want to feed it raw with the tummy problems, but boiled hamburger or chicken with rice, are common remedies for upset digestive systems.  You might try chicken if the hamburger isn't working.  I totally agree with MRV though that you need to be sure there are no parasites or worms causing this.  Has the vet done a stool sample?  If that isn't the problem, then I'd start off with the 12 hour fast, then a day or two of boiled hamburger or chicken with rice (the rice needs to be cooked to a mush-like consistency).  If that works, you could start trying small amounts of kibble.  I'd be buying the smallest bags until you can find something that's tolerated.  You can also add a tablespoon of canned pumpkin (not the spiced kind for pies, just pure pumpkin) to each meal and it sometimes helps to firm up stools (helps with constipation too - and I have no idea why or how).  Gook luck, it sounds like it's been a frustrating time, but hopefully you'll find something that works soon.

Sheprano- anytime one of the dogs has an upset tummy the vet always recommends a diet of boiled hamburger and rice. Why do you say no hamurger?

I wasnt aware of that. If I tried to give Rory hamburger she'd explode in a burst of the runs. I had never heard of that before, even with all the grease or does boiling it remove all the grease?

Boiled hamburger or boiled chicken with white rice is standard fare for a short-term diet that calms the tummy. There is not a lot of "grease" in lean ground beef, and what there is you drain off with the water.

I have friends whose Wheaten has severe food allergies, source still undetermined. I may be wrong but I think this breed is one that's prone to allergies. Also, coincidentally, they used to feed Wellness and he always had runny stool.

So if I gather correctly you have tried a couple of chicken-based foods and a lamb-based food. What you should do next is choose a high quality food with a different protein source. Natural Balance makes a Venison formula and a Herring formula both good for allergy dogs. California Natural makes a simple Herring formula. Solid Gold has a very formulas with different protein sources including beef and bison. The transition to a new food may cause the runs, but if you add some plain unsweetened yogurt this could help the pup's digestion. Plain canned pumpkin can add a little fiber and bulk to the food. Give it at least a few days for the puppy to adjust before attempting to switch again.
