Tug o War games

All of you seem to be "dog people" who know how to stop a dog when the playing gets too rough.....how to be in control.  Many people do not have that amount of control over their dogs and run into trouble with tug games.  One of my dear friends has a large  GSD and she used to play tug with him - he was all over her with his teeth and claws because she was not in control.  We worked with "off, sit, drop" commands till he understood what to do.

Tug is fine if you are in control - but if you are not or little kids get into it with dogs it can get too rough and someone could get hurt. My 2 cents worth (grin)

My kids know what they can and can't do with the dogs. That is where educating yourself and your children about dog ownership comes in handy. Sometimes tug of war is used to bring out the drive in dogs may it be prey drive, fight drive or play drive. If dog owners let their dogs be the alpha in the pack than playing tug of war isn't a good game to play.

Only one of our 4 likes to play tug at any length and she does use her paws and tries to get closer to your hand.  We don't let kids play tug with her because of this.  We control the game with the length of the tug and height she can grab at.  We say when it begins and when it ends and with what toy we will play with her with.  And she's Omega in our pack...
