Orijen= diarrhea? Help! (BlackLabbie)

After about the first month of switching, Harry dropped the 6 pounds he needed to lose (yay!).  They both had slightly loose stools for the first week or so (after a slow transition from NB to Orijen), but after that, they both have excellent stools.

I dont need Joker to loose weight!

The regular adult formula is about $10 less than the 6 Fresh Fish, if that helps, Kim.  And, from k9cuisine...free shipping!

Joker is allergic to anything with wings.Stick out tongue So I've been giving him fish based foods. He's on TOTW Pacific Stream kind right now. But I'm having to feed him 4 cups a day to keep him at a good weight. He only weighs 45lbs so I was thinking with the higher protein in Orijen he'd eat less.

Guess I'll order him some. Shhh dont tell JJ how much it's gonna cost!

Our lips are sealed, lol. Zip it!

Harry needed to lose weight.  His old food (Natural Balance) I think was too high in carbs.  He lost the 6 lbs he needed to, and has maintained a steady, perfect 60 pounds ever since.  I don't feed him any more Orijen that I did to begin with while he was losing weight...I think it was simply a matter of better ratios of protein to fat to carbs in the Orijen vs the NB that allowed him to drop the pounds.

Good luck!!  I hope Joker does well on it, and I sure hope Apollo, Patty, and Molson improve, too!

Unless you are running marathons with your lab I'd go back to two and a half cups, seriously. And yes, try about half a cup for your two inactive dogs. My Maggie is about 40 pounds and eats that plus a teeny bone every other day. But you'll want to give them a multivitamin and fish oil too. Nothing fancy, just a pet tab with each meal or whatever you can find that is convenient. Even a kids multivitamin is fine. I can explain why if you want but I've got to run right now and move sheep. :)

Becca, this morning Patty & Molson had *TINY* rock solid poops! Yahooooooooo! Apollo's is still smooshy, but wasn't watery.

Excellent news!!  My friend with the boxer is going to cut him back as well - I'll let you know if she gets good results too

I'm glad to hear they're improving!  Food transitions can be so difficult sometimes.  Hopefully the Orijen will work out for you guys, I love how well my dogs do on it.

The 1/2 cup Becca recommended sounds perfect.  Nike is 25 pounds, and he gets about 2/3 cup and has a high activity level.  Honor at 11 pounds gets 1/4-1/3 cup, and Nikki (19 lbs) and Eli (13 lbs) get almost 1/2 cup. Eli gets that much because he's my super-burner.  The boy burns up calories like no tomorrow!

Has Apollo's digestion improved since your last post?

He's not gassy anymore (thank doG! lol!) but his poop is still like a "soft serve ice cream" consistancy...I know whatta discription, tmi! Also, he only goes poop 1x a day.

Patty is going once in the morning, once in the evening. Molson sometimes goes once a day, sometimes he goes twice a day. Those 2 have very tiny, hard poops.

When Toots was on Orijen, she ate 1/3 of a cup in the am and pm, along with her Salmon Oil and Vit. E. She weighs 25 lbs and is not very active. She also pooped 1x daily.

OK, I'm taking him off this food. It's just not good for him, I guess. He's had the runs and/or "soft serve" poop....no normal poop still. I cannot take cleaning up the sticky, smooshy poop Ick!. And the smell of his poop....**gag**....O-M-doG...it's terrible!!!!

Why is the only food he's had normal poop and no gas w/ is Purina Sensative Stomache? The food ingredient list isn't good at all.

I saw your post, and thought I'd chime in..

I tried Sierra on Orijen a few months ago. I like that it's a small company, Canadian, grain free, etc - but Sierra's body wanted nothing to do with it. Poops were sorta ok, but softer than normal. But she started puking bile almost every day, if she didn't eat within 8 hours of her last feeding. Kept it up for about a week, before I switched back to Evo Red Meat.  That works MUCH better for her.

So you're not the only one who really wanted to like Orijen. Unfortunate, too, because it's cheaper than Evo around here. Hopefully you can find something else that works.

He also did this a few times.... *sigh* I really wanted to like this food!

Hmmm...both of mine did that when I first started them back on kibble.  They're good now though.

     Question!

I ordered a bag of the 6 fish kind Sunday and it was delivered today. I love K9 cuisine! Especially with free shipping and it only took 2 days to get here! Plus I got a free bag of Wellness treats and a food scooper!

Anyways on to my question. Joker gets 3 cups of TOTW fish kind a day. It's only 25% protein. How much should I start him off with on the Orijen? Does half a cup sound ok?

    • Gold Top Dog

It's great that they're improving. I've switched several of my friend's boxers to Orijen 6 Fresh Fish and they're all doing great and staying lean. If I ever went back to kibble, it would be a no-brainer. Expensive but worth it. Canadian made ftw!
