I've never used any, but I do let my dogs lick most of my dishes for a little variety.  The eat Cal. Natural which is supposedly rather bland but they scarf it down and all have amazing coats.

Years ago when Ollie used to be at my house all the time... Mike took him to a Natural Pet place and they are the ones who first suggested Probitics and we started him on Dog Zymes ( all the dogs been using ever since ) She also suggested Dog Bloom...a vitamin, mineral etc  supplement which was pretty expensive but she felt it was very important especially with his allergy problem.

Eventually we "spoke" to Great Dane Lady about his problems.... and one thing she said was NO NO NO  Dog Bloom with the better food.  We threw the rest away and never thought about giving him extra vitamins again.

Ena gets Nupro joing, right now. I'm going to try Nuvet, next container, just because. I'm happy enough with the Nupro, but a Crested breeder I respect uses Nuvet, and her dogs are gorgeous, so why not? Used Show Stopper for a while, wasn't thrilled. It grew coat, but I felt like it also "grew" the dog. She got fat.

Emma gets nothing. Emma is special.

I use supplements but ONLY what's recommended by my holistic vets specifically for each one.

Dr. Demers (the homeopathic vet) has actually cautioned me that by just giving "extra" stuff willy nilly, all those extra things (like unused anti-oxidants, vitamines, etc.) can actually be converted to free radicals in the body which work against everything you may be trying to do.

Now I home cook -- specifically because I want to avoid bad stuff and provide the best I can.  I don't eat "lunch-cicles" and "Hamburger Helper" -- I eat real food with as few preservatives and processing as possible.  So that's what I try to do for the dogs.  But honestly, to *me* extra is defined by what **that** particular dog needs.  Not just a generic "extra".

Is a supplement different than Salmon oil?

    • Gold Top Dog

I figure it is. I have a can of the show stopper.Myrt and Frosty like it but it's got way to much fat in it for Myrt.I use the Solid Gold Seameal for Myrt when I home cook.Frosty will not eat food with Seameal in it.

    I would take Callie's advise.

Yeah, Willow does get them but you should as others have mentioned use what your dog needs.  Willow gets a multi-vitamin-that started after she went on bland food for IBS and other stuff, Welactin (which I love), and 1/2 tsp of Metamucil every few days.

That's about it.  Your dogs are young, they might not need anything at this point.  Especially, if they are eating well and getting good nutrition.

Thanks for all the input! I forgot to mention that Gingerbread has Intervertebral Disc Disease so I want to start him on supplements like glucosamine and msm to help with that. Also, I'd like for his coat to be shinier and softer and also want something to boost his immune system. So I've decided on Nupro Joint Support. It has everything that I'm looking for in a supplement.

Let us know how he is doing with them after a while...will be interesting to note!

    And GOOD LUCK!

My three all get the same supplements: fish oil in the am and glucosamine/chondroitin in the pm, both on reccommendation of our vet.  I also top their morning food with plain yogurt for the probiotics and when one of them is on antibiotics that one gets an additional probiotic supplement.

If the Nupro doesn't work out for the coat/immune system you could try Welactin.  Willow's been on it for a few months now and it's worked wonders for her very bad skin/coat condition.  You wouldn't need much of it at all with a dog his size.  Our bottle lasts about 2-3 months.
