What do you feed in a pinch?

What do you feed in a pinch?

This isn't fully dog related, but it does deal with nutrition.

I tend to by dog and cat food once a month...several bags to last for several weeks, which is expensive but more convenient for me. By this point of the month, I'm getting towards the low-end of the supply, so naturally, it would make sense that something ridiculous should happen.

Some particular black and white dog, who shall remain nameless, snuck into the cat closet (a walk-in closet that houses their feeders) and cleaned out both feeders. Needless to say, that was a lot of food, and now I'm sitting around with an extremely gassy dog. Personally, I'm amazed the other two didn't get in on the action, but it was the middle of the night, and rarely do any of them move from their beds...except for last night, apparently.

I typically feed the cats Solid Gold or Welllness Core, but that's only available to me via a special trip to another town. So the only resource I had available to me was Wal-mart. I doubt the store I regularly use will be open tomorrow since it's 1. Sunday and 2. Easter so I did the best I could for the time being...Purina One. It's not like Wal-mart has much of a selection, none of the feed stores are open either. I'm pretty unhappy with such a drastic change, but it's only until Monday, and at this point, I don't think the cats care either.

So that got me thinking...what would you feed in a pinch?

If it's for 24 hours or less, I'll fast the dogs.  If it's for several days, we go to overcooked rice or oatmeal (always on hand), canned pumkin, usual supplements, and a bit of whatever meat we have handy that's not seasoned too much.  I might also consider soup on hand for the people in the house if it didn't contain stuff likely to be problematic for dogs.  If I had to get a kibble for some reason I'd probably go with Purina One if I had to pick off the grocery shelf.  We usually have at least a few cans of canned food in the pantry for backup in case we need to give meds or someone goes off their feed, so that provides a buffer as well.

For the cat, I'd prob go straight to the PO since fasting can be bad for their systems in a big way.  Of course this would be extremely rare as I tend to make sure I always have a bag of cat food in waiting while he's finishing the current bag since he has a sensitive stomach.

Purina One isn't too awful - I hate the price for what it is but if I had no choice in the matter.

But, I can go get what I need from the meat and cereal section of Walmart, anyway. Ted and Lynn and Jetta eat two pounds of raw meaty bones per day plus one cup of prepared oatmeal or 8 oz of potatoes. The rest get  one pound, plus 4 oz of potato. Lu gets 8 oz of fish too and 8 oz of potato. Throw a bag of steamed mixed stir-fry veggies in the food processor and we're good to go.

I've been keeping cases of Tripett around, too, so that's handy for emergencies.

My older dog can eat just about anything without a problem, so I'd find a protein and carb mix that kept her happy. Sassy though has so many allergies that I never run out of her Duck & Potato food. If I did though, I'd sub in some tuna and maybe some cooked potatoes. I know she does fine with fish, but I'm not so sure about rice or pasta. I still have some buckwheat from the elimination diet, so I could also use that.

I keep an "emergency backup" food at home, which is always one that I fed, but then switched to something else. The one time that I ran out of food, my husband and I traveled with the dogs longer than I expected. I got Nutro Ultra at Petsmart.

If my guys were kibble fed, I'd probably just fast them if it were just for 24 hours or so.

As is, they eat the same things as we do anyway, so I could always shop out of our freezer & pantry for a meal or two.

I would either home cook for a few days since I always have canned salmon or mackeral on hand, eggs and rice too for that matter and could add veggies.  I wouldn't hesitate to feed Purina One if needed since my dogs ate it for years until I got smarter from reading this nutrition section. :)

I do this, too, but I would probably not do Purina - my nearest market carries Newmans Own, and I have occasionally used that in a pinch.

I get the dog food delivered and it comes in big bags which will last a good couple of months.  I try to re-order when we run low, but sometimes I misjudge it or forget and we do run out!  They can skip a meal or two without too much bother (that's about a day).  If we are waiting any longer than that they might get scrambled egg on toast (which they love) or a little porridge, then later on meat (fresh if we have any handy, if not we have Pedigree canned for real emergencies) with a little rice, green beans and table scraps.

They love it when we run out of food.

Since my dogs/cats only get 50% commerical food, they'd just get 100% raw. I'd maybe stretch it out with potatoes or yams so it'd be more cost effective.

I'm not allowed to have pinches. Stoopid Emma. If I ran out of her food, she'd just have to wait til I got more.

The cat, however, will eat anything. That is how he came to be mine. I'd just dump some dog food or some people food in his bowl, and he'd happily scarf it down.

This hasn't happened to us... yet. That I can recall anyway. However, if it did, I'd just give them some cottage cheese and a raw egg.

Eggs.  I always have eggs on hand because I love eggs and I bake quite a bit.  There have been a few times when I've gone to the freezer to get meals and realized there was no meat in there.  So a 10 eggs devided 6 and 4 between the dog with some rice or pasta or potatoes to go with it will do them in a pinch.

well - for the cats, I'd probably do Purina - since that's what they used to eat. I get all their food at petsmart - and usually one is open on holidays, for at least part of the day (Easter at least!).

I have a couple of cans of food around too - just in case.

Casey - I'd just do some meat and rice, or potato, and egg, something like that. I'm sure he'd enjoy it.

My guys are now on a raw diet. I wouldn't feel bad for fasting for 24 hours, but if it were, say, a long weekend or something.....

    - if possible, raw meat that we would make for ourselves.
    - then a meal of eggs or a can of tripe (venison or beef).
    - if none of those things, I would use some dog treats (salmon fudge or cookies), or if it came right down to it I would have no problem feeding a meal of kibble. I still use some kibble for treats in training, as it's just simpler.
