Best fish oil brand?

    Best fish oil brand?

I've been noticing lately that Penny's coat is a bit dry and dandruffy. It's probably the cold temperatures we're STILL getting up here in Manitoba. Anyway, I want to get her a fish oil supplement, but I was wondering what the best kind/brand is? Thank you!

I use Sea Pet Gold. It's a convenient liquid form, super concentrated which makes it very cost-effective (just a 1/4 tsp dose for the average healthy dog) and it includes the proper amount of natural vitamin E so I don't have to mess with that separately (further saving money too).

I also use their human line of fish oil and there's a huge difference between theirs and any other I've ever tried - including premium brands.

Sea Pet is available at many pet supply places, but you can only get the Gold direct from their web site. I've placed many orders with them and they've treated me right.

I've used almost all of the above and have had the best results with Welactin3.

I went to the pet store and boy oh boy are some of those fish oils pricey! Are the human fish supplements cheaper? What about flax seeds? I know that fish oil is supposed to work better, since it's an animal product not plant, so it can be aborbed better. The lady at the pet store that GROUND flax seed works just as well as fish oil. Is there any truth to this? Would flax seed work just as good? TIA

I use Grizzly Salmon Oil ad its not too expensive. Also, its made in Kirkland, Wa., so its local for me. Though I still get it online.

Plant oils are not as good for most dogs as animal based (ie, fish body oil) because the form of omega 3 they provide, ALA, must be further broken down into EFA and DHA before the body can use it. Humans can do this easily in most cases, but it's much more difficult for most dogs, and some can't do it at all.

Human supplements that are the quality that is worth your while, are just as spendy. BUT, here's the catch with the discount stuff.  If you spend $8 on 100 fish oil capsules at Walmart, they might have only 125 mg of EFA and 75 of DHA, while my Sea Starr (Sea Pet for people, lol) capsules provide 435 mg of EFA and 312 mg of DHA per single capsule. Plus, they arrive guaranteed fresh and free of heavy metals and other toxins.

Not so much with the discount drug store brands. If they are contaminated they are worse than useless. You spend just as much or more to get the same levels of OFAs, except if the oils are oxidized or exposed to heat, then you are buying a bottle of nothing!

I've pretty much seen the same results from every brand (and I have seen results), although I'd make sure to use wild rather than farmed.

I'm on a tight budget and have three large dogs so I've stepped down a bit but have seen no ill results. I like the Costo brand just fine or Jeffers has one that works fine too.

I ended up going with Dr. Goodpet brand of fish oil capsules. They're quite reasonable and easy to get. The dogs aren't super keen on them, but they reluctantly licked it up. Hehe.

I've had the most success with Nature's Logic Sardine oil.
