I fed it for a while, but I ended up with 2 bags that smelled and looked strange, so I switched to Wellness Core. My crew has been on that since, although I would go back to it. I just didn't know if I hit a bad batch.

Fed it to the two malinois - did great on it. They found it very palatable - went through a whole big bag without either one of them getting sick of it.

IMO, it is a bit on the pricey side for what you are getting. I use it in my rotation when I stop at Petco and need to pick up food - the dogs won't touch Wellness, so Solid Gold it is - they like it and it's easy to find around here.

See, that's what we're looking for...a food commonly found in big chains because of more sales and coupons that is still good quality.

Okay............. I used to be in the same boat as you.  Niko, my lab used to poop a LOT when eating Canidae.

The only Solid Gold I ever used was Hunchen Flocken puppy formula (I wanted higher protein content and moderate fat).  I know it was supposedly for puppies BUT it worked great for my lab (who, at the time was almost 2 years old and very active).  Solid Gold adult formulas so low in protein content, in my personal opinion.

I am now trying (I am almost finished with the first 40lb bag) Kirkland Chicken and Egg formula dry food.  It was made supposedly for mature dogs (7 years or older).  I picked this one over Kirkland Chicken, Rice, and Vegetables because the protein (27%) and fat (12%) content of the food.  The main protein sources are chicken and eggs.... no glutens.  Niko's coat is very soft and shiny (while on Canidae, it was dry and coarse) on this food and I got what I wanted in terms of minimum protein and fat content, and best of all, at $25 per 40lb bag, it won't break my bank account.  My lab gets 2 cups a day (along with some home cooked meat).  Poops are VERY VERY SMALL......  literally less than 1/2 the size of his Canidae poops.

P.S.  I used to not like Diamond or made by Diamond products but, I am giving it a try and so far so good.... I will post the ingredient list and guaranteed analysis later.

Aesop eats it, mixed with his Taste of the Wild. He needs some grains in his diet or he ends up with gross poo. He's eaten Wolf Cub his entire puppyhood and did very well. We just switched to Wolf King and he's still doing well. My sole complaint (or, should I say Aesop's sole complaint) is the kibble size. It's a little larger than the puppy kibble and he wasn't so sure of that at first.  But aside from my dog's pickiness about having to chew big kibble, we like the foodSmile

OK I will admit that I am also not wild about the kibble size. All other foods that we feed, we just get the biggest bag we can find and split it between the two malinois and the mini schnauzer. We tried it with Wolf King, but the kibble was so big that the schnauzer was practically chewing each piece, then spitting it out, then chewing it down until she made it into a manageable size. So, when we get Wolf King for the big girls, we have to get Just a Wee Bit (pretty much the same formula) for the little girl. ;)

We have also used Hund N Flocken and had good results. I think the Hund N Flocken might be a bit cheaper, but I know it isn't bison - lamb and fish meal or chicken and lamb...? I can't remember exactly, but the dogs did well on that too.

Is that the brand that is only sold in Costco?

I only tried one bag of this a while back and it is to date the only food Bugsy just didn't want to eat.  He is NOT a fussy eater and would eat the other kibble I had at the time (Barking at the Moon).  I strongly suspected that something was off with that bag so I called Solid Gold.  Worst customer service I have had - they have no satisfaction guarantee on their food at all.  Knowing that Bugsy will eat paper from a kong with zealousness I ditched the food and don't use their products anymore.

So likely a bad bag but the attitude of no your dog is just fussy didn't fill me with confidence knowing my dog eats anything.

I would rather feed TOTW which here is cheaper

Yes, it is.  Sorry it took me awhile to respond.  With a 20 month old daughter, life is a bit hectic and I can't get to the computer as often as before.

Here is the ingredient and guaranteed analysis for Kirkland Chicken, Rice & Egg formula ------ comes in bright blue bag (supposedly made for mature dogs...7 years or older....but I am feeding it to my 2 1/2 year old lab with better result than the regular adult formula and definitely better result than Canidae...).

Chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, egg product, oatmeal, cracked pearled barley, brewers rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and vitamin E), beet pulp, potatoes, natural chicken flavor, flaxseed, fish meal, potassium chloride, choline chloride, glucosamine hydrochloride, chondrontin sulfate, carrots, peas, kelp, apples, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flakes, dry chicory roots, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, mangenese proteinate, mangaous oxide, asorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, L-carnitine, biotin, calcium pantothenate, mangenese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

    Crude Protein 27% (min), Crude Fat 12% (min), Crude Fiber 3% (max), Moisture 10% (max), Calcium 0.9% (min), Phosphorus 0.7% (min), Sodium 0.25% (max), Zinc 225 mg/kg (min), Selenium 0.4 mg/kg (min), Vitamin E 160 IU/kg (min), L-Carnitine 30 mg/kg (min), Omega 6 fatty acids 2.2% (min), Omega 3 fatty acids 0.4% (min), Glucosamine Hydrochloride 1200 mg/kg (min) , Chondrontin Sulfate 400 mg/kg (min).

Based on my experience, I would definitely buy only this Kirkland formula from Costco.  I don't like the regular Kirkland Chicken Rice and Vegetables or Kirkland Lamb Rice and Vegetables.....I got a week's worth of the chicken rice and vegetables from a colleague and my lab's poops were definitely larger than on chicken rice and egg formula.  Also, at $25 for 40 lb bag, I can still buy him good canned meat like Innova Evo, Wellness, and Evangers,  marrow bones, bully sticks, sardines, chicken wings, chicken necks, eggs, fish oil, vitamin E and glucosamine/chondrontin supplements, fruits and veggies, and etc. without worrying about spending too much money given the economic condition.....lol.

Niko, 70 to 72 lbs and on the lean side, gets 2 cups a day of dry food plus stuff (noted above).  The 40lb bag lasts about 2 to 2 1/2 months.

    Pauline.

P.S. - - I remember one time I got so fed up with the size and frequency of Niko's poops when he eating Canidae, I almost trashed the still more than half full 40lb bag of Canidae ALS (before they switched to smaller bags).  Another food that you might want to consider is Healthwise Chicken and Oatmeal (by Naturapet).  I also got a good result (and also small poops).  It is economical (but not as economical as Kirkland's).  The problem I have is that I have to special order the food....

Just wanted to chime in that I know someone with four large dogs that were eating him out of house and home with their food bill each month. He has a couple of really active dogs, so he was also feeding a larger quantity. He was trying all the super-premium foods, and at $2+/lb, he simply couldn't afford to continue to feed it at that price. He switched to Kirkland brand and *loves* it. In fact, he tells everyone he knows about it. He said his dogs' coats have never looked better, poop is small and dense, and he isn't breaking the bank doing it. I think 40 lbs only lasts him like 2-3 weeks, so you can see why he needed to find an economical solution.

I have yet to join Costco, especially because it is about 4 towns away from me, but I may have to just for the dog food!

    Stephanie,

Today I decided to get Kirkland Lamb Rice and Vegetables to try.  I have heard before that some forum members have mentioned that the lamb based food has "burnt" smell.  I just opened the bag and it has no burnt smell.  It smells just like any other red meat based food.  The kibble is darker color and my lab gobbles the food down as usual (he does not turn down food).  At Costco close to my house, these are the prices:

40 lbs Chicken Rice and Vegetables = $23.99 (crude protein 26% and fat 16%)

40 lbs Lamb Rice and Vegetables = $23.99 (crude protein 23 % and fat 14%)

40 lbs Chicken Rice and Eggs = $24.99  (this is the one whose ingredient and guaranteed analysis I posted above, with crude protein 27% and fat 12%)

I would prefer a higher protein content for the lamb based food, but, again, at $23.99 for 40 lb bag (it will last my lab a little over two months), I can spend some cash on good canned food, raw food, and etc to add to his kibble without breaking my bank account.  Also, my dog's coat is way better (shinier and softer) than when he was eating Canidae.  He also cannot eat grain free because of the potatoes (if not, I would not mind buying him some TOTW).  A little quantity of potatoes is alright but when he eats too much, he will get yeast infection in his ears.

P.S. Costco membership pays for itself.  My husband and I have executive membership at $100 per year (which include the costco amex card).  We get rebate cash back from both Costco and Amex.  I think we got a total of over $300 of rebate cash back last year.  The rebate checks must be used at Costco but I literally got all cash back (since I only spend about $10 at Costco that day).

This is a really stupid question but what sorts of things can you get at Costco besides the Kirkland?  I haven't lived in a Costco town in ten years.

LOL we are Costco addicts - you can get all sorts of stuff there - we do the bulk of our food shopping there, the electronics prices are fantastic, they have clothes, kitchen goods, hardware, exercise stuff, cleaning and house stuff, furniture, books, bedding, toiletries, vitamins, etc.  You can surf their website for a taste of the non-food items.

DH went on Friday - got metal shelving for the garage, grass seed, dim sum, tomatoes, wine, sardines, egg whites, lettuce, and goodness knows what else.  Bugsy's beds are from there way big enough for him and were like $16 nice fiber and cedar fill.

The one in Durham isn't toooooooooooo far - we used to go there before they built one in Raleigh.
