Non raw teeth cleaning chews

    Non raw teeth cleaning chews

I keep trying RMBs for my guys for the purposes of teeth cleaning (considering their ages, 13, almost 10 and 7) their teeth have only a tiny line of plaque on them. I do brush and maintain them as much as I can.

However, I like giving them something to chew on. Every time I try to go raw with them, at least one of them barfs it back up.  They can't seem to handle raw very well.

So what will work for this?  Pizzles?  They love greenies, but they really make me nervous!

I've been looking for something like this too - Pirate's not interested in bully sticks and I don't feel comfortable with RMB's. I can't find a decent company that makes dried sweet potatoes, so I might take a whack at drying my own.

My dogs love bully sticks and flossies, but I'm not sure how they are at cleaning teeth.

This was the problem I've had for so long; there was nothing that my little chihuahua could chew on that would make a difference in his teeth.

He finally had his first raw chicken wing yesterday, so far so good, but I only gave him a small part of it for around 15mn or so.

The vet highly recommended these rawhide chews that they sale that have a special enzyme engraved in them to help break the rawhide down as well as the plaque on the teeth. I have given my Pom and my chihuahua each one of them so far; they both spent 3 hrs licking the chewey's to death but were actually unable to eat them entirely....which I thought was a good thing, cause their mouths were getting a great work out, along with their teeth, but their stomach didn't have to worry about the rawhide.

I'm NOT a fan of rawhide, at all. But figured these were worth a try; as a typical dental cleaning is around $4-500 around these parts of the country.

I like the Zukes dental bones, they come in carrot, mint, and cranberry flavors and seem safer than greenies to me.  I'm also a fan of sweet potato chews but having no dehydrator means we don't have them much if at all (I did find american made sweet potato chews at Petsmart, but they're really pricey).  Merrick tendon chews certainly keep Z occupied for a a while but I dunno how much cleaning they do.  Pizzles just gross me out and they stink.

Premier has a new "Bristle Bone" that my coworkers rave about but with a dog in the house that can't chew on hard stuff due to her tooth repair I haven't tried it myself.

Oooooo those Zuke's chews look decent :) Thanks.

I don't think anything cleans teeth as well as RMBs. I have trouble believing those composite chews (greenies, Zuke's) or rawhide does anything as per tooth cleaning because people who use them regularly sure seem to frequently have dogs with dirty teeth. I would think for the tiny dogs something like the small feeder animals sold for feeding reptiles would make good RMBs once chopped up. Gross idea maybe but wouldn't a mouse quarter be just perfect for a chi?

Uh, sure, but the OP was asking for non-raw alternatives...

Emma gets no RMBs, because she's Emma. I give her Merrick Texas Toothpicks (cow tails! MmmM!), bully sticks, Old West tendon chews, flossies, dried sweet potatoes, the occasional Booda bone, and the rare recreational bone. She's 5 years old, and her teeth look fabulous. Maybe it's heredity, IDK. Ena Bean is over a year, now, and her teeth still look awesome. She eats the same as Emma, and she's a Crested. Cresteds are all supposed to have nasty mouths. I've been on top of hers from the get-go, having extras pulled to keep her bite nice and all of that, but no need for cleaning  in the forseeable future. I basically just make sure there's something to chew on, all  the time.

I just read a Whole Dog Journal article that says green tripe is good for teeth. You can read it by going here http://raiseapaw4raw.com/ Select "Raw Green Tripe", then scroll down to "Whole Dog Journal.com Article about Raw Green Tripe".
