Raw food Question

    Raw food Question

So for Thanksgiving both my mother and brother got a turkey from their work.  And b/c it's only the three of us we have no use for two turkeys.

So know I have a frozen turkey that I know we aren't going to eat.  I was wondering if it is okay to feed it to the dogs?  Will the bones be to hard? or will it be okay.

I won't be giving the whole thing in one day but thaw it out, cut it up into manageable sizes for the three dogs as an extra treat maybe once a day?

That's a great idea. Have you fed your dogs raw before?  Raw bones are good for dogs to eat, but only raw bones, don't try to cook them. Cooked bones can injure the dog's intestines.  I learned it the hard way when my dog started pooping blood after eating cooked chicken bones.

I feed my dog raw chicken all the time now. A whole chicken lasts me about a week for my 30lb dog.  I cut it up in handful of chunks and bag them separately in my freezer including the bones.  Then I defrost when needed.   I never seem to have extra meat in the house now since doing raw.

I just wanted to add to watch them when they chew the wings. You should always watch your dog when they're chewing bones but the turkey wings really seem to splinter a lot. Jessie can't have chicken because of her allergies so I tried turkey wings and they splintered so bad she's not getting them anymore. It's really cool that you have so much nice free meat for them.

What I'd do is, if it is at all practical - stick those turkeys out there without cutting them up.  Let the dogs gnaw on them, then bag them up in a giant baggie (you can find them in the storage section of Wal-Mart if you can't find them with the regular baggies).  It's inconvenient, but it seems to minimize splintering of those larger bones.  Turkeys are grown out very fast and without regard to ability to actually bear the weight on their bones, since they are slaughtered at a young age.  Thus, their bones tend to be quite splintery for their size (lamb bones which are that size, for instance, crunch rather than splintering).

Awesome..thanks allBig Smile.  I didn't want to give it to them with out knowing for sure.  They love to have raw food so this won't be the first time..just that it will be turkey.

Ya, know, come to think of it, I have a turkey in my freezer too...I should toss it to the dog.  Crusher won't let Onyx have any, and he'll likely stay outside for the next 3 days guarding it, but at least it won't go to waste, and I'll save on the other dog food.  LOL.

Do chicken wings splinter like the turkey wings??

Definitely not.  Wings are terrific for wee dogs.  It's a consumable bone though - make sure if you feed them to the little ones that you take into account the kcals.  They are bony, so if you feed a lot of them you'll want to balance things with a bit more whole meat.  A lot would be defined as one per day for a little dog.  A lot for a big dog would be about eight.  LOL.
