Poop, again...

    Poop, again...

I've been feeding Tootsie, Orijen for about a month now. Everythings fine, except the poop. Or should I say the increase. Size, color, smell and consistency all fine, but.... when she was on EP Holistic Fish it was once a day, now its 3x. Should I blow it off , switch??

I can't believe she only pooped once a day before! Apollo poops 2-3x a day, and he's eating Canidae ALS regular formula.

ditto. isnt pooping 2-3 times a day normal?

Mine go once first thing in the morning, and once after the evening meal, so twice a day usually.  Sometimes the working dogs finish a session by emptying their bowels but they'll still go a bit later, too (they get fed dinner quite late).

Try backing off the amount a little and see whether you like the result.

I'm going to back off a little on the amount. I believe dogs are like people whn it comes to pooping. 2-3x daily is not normal for me.

Yeah, I'd try reducing the amount a bit and see how that works.  I agree 2-3 times a day on a high quality food is too much.

I fed Rivers Orijen puppy food for quite a while, he pooped twice a day, but they were smaller poops. I personally didn't see anything wrong with it.

I've had all 3 of my dogs on homecooked foods for well over 4 mnths with no grains in their diet, they still poop twice a day, all 3 of them.

Honestly, I think if you're an active person/animal, it IS normal to poop twice a day as it helps keep the bowels regular and moving.

Could also mean she's digesting the food faster and easier then before.

Sometimes Max poops two or three times just on his walk. Big Smile If I let a couple of days go by due to weather, the back yard looks like I'm running a kennel.  He's healthy in every other way so I think that dogs, like people, vary in what's normal. He's on EP Holistic so I'm sure there's no problem with the food and he only eats 1-1/2 to 2 cups a day so there's no way to cut back on the amount.

Emma "poop marks" on walks, too. That's different from needing to poop, though.

Are you feeding the same amount of Orijen as the EP?  Orijen runs around 480 kcal/cup, wheras the EP is around 350 kcal/cup--you may just be feeding too much, so cutting back your portions should help.

I'm an idiot when it comes to kcals, so yes I'm feeding the same amount. 1/2 cup in the am and a 1/3 cup at night. Help!

So, if you were feeding EP:  1/2 c=175kcal and 1/3c=118kcal   Total kcal 296  (these are rough calculations--I'm rounding)

                                  Orijen: 1/2 c=240kcal and 1/3c=160kcal    Totalkcal 400

You would be better off feeding just under 1/3 cup at each feeding  (1/3c+1/3c=320kcal of Orijen)  Since you were feeding roughly 300kcals of the EP, this should keep her right near the 300 kcals previously fed.  You can always adjust if you see weight fluctuations.

    Hope this helps.

it does sound like reducing the amount would be good

on the other topic of pooping - Bugsy poops 2-3x a day regardless of whether he is on orjen fish or has raw meals  He doesn't poop a lot in volume though
