Pedigree Canned

    Pedigree Canned

I cannot - absolutely CANNOT - believe what I just did !!!   I knew I was down to 2 cans of food (enough for 6 days total) but I left too late and our local "natural dog food" store was already closed.    She's closed on Sundays and I can't get there during the week so I have to wait until next Saturday.   I need milk so I stopped in the grocery store ... and bought 2 cans of Pedigree "weight management" food.    "meat by products" is one of the first ingredients.

Part of me says "parts is parts" (remember that old Perdue commercial ???) and rationalizes that maybe some of those "parts" are actually part of a dogs natural diet.   Part of me says "I cannot believe I bought this stuff !!!".   And then there is the frugal part of me that says "hey, one can of this stuff every two weeks or so isn't the end of the world".

Prancer needs low fat, hence the weight management formula.   I'll still be adding fresh meat to her meal.    I don't know if I'm posting as a "confession for my sins" or if I'm looking for validation that I'm not the worst dog-mom in the world.

You are a fantastic dog mom; Prancer will probably love the change. This link;     http://www.akcchf.org/pdfs/whitepapers/feedpets90s.pdf

says that by products are animal parts not used for human food such as kidneys, lung, tripe and liver. Doesn't sound bad to me.Big Smile

My mom's dog is 15 1/2 and has lived most of his life on Canned Pedigree (til he got picky and mom started crockpotting for him!). Honestly, it's the nicest grocery brand, and quite a few varieties of the cans are grain free.

Parts are parts. I wouldn't feed it to Emma, because she's allergic to air, but in a pinch? I'd pick something like that for Ena (and hey, I fed her frozen Bil Jac for a while to fatten her.... same thing!).

Thanks guys, I needed to hear that.  I  knew I could count on you.

I do have 2 cans of the Wellness left.  Since she only gets 1/3rd of a can per day I have enough to make it to next weekend after all !   I just need to remember how early that store closes and to get my rear in gear earlier.     If it ends up that I don't need the Pedigree I'll put it in this years hurricane evac kit along with the Hills ID that I always keep on hand.

Don't feel bad, I occasionally buy a few cans of Mighty Dog because, well, Zack just loves it.  The best thing about the really cheap canned foods is that they are almost all meat.  It's the mid grade and some of the holistic brands that stuff half the can with grains and veggies.

Yup, I know a lady who fed her dogs on CHAPPIE - my goodness I have never SEEN such healthy dogs!  CHAPPIE!!!!

I THINK Dog Lovers in Tarpon (on 19) is open on Sundays....I could be wrong though - it's a pretty big, and nice, store though.

Casey's eaten Pedigree canned before (small amounts, not meals) - I didn't feel too bad - and I don't even give him treats!

Prancer is super lucky to have you as a doggy mom =]

I want to go to my local place - I'm hoping it helps to keep her in business (this economy stinks and I'm trying my best to shop at only my favorite stores).   She doesn't carry the small bags of Core so I may need to head up on 19 anyway for that but I'll still buy the cans locally (Natural Pet on 580 and CR1).

Michelle used to get Mighty Dog as a topper for her kibble.   I always had fun picking out my favorite flavors LOL.    If I could tell how much fat they had I would have gotten that last night.    Oh well - at least I have a couple of cans of hurricane reserves to mix with the ID (which I HATE but it always helps Prancer she has a bad tummy).

    ah, gotchya.

I've never been there - but I've heard good things. I usually get my EVO from My Pets Dream, but I'll look into that one - it may be easier to get into!

Oh well --- I fed some of the Pedigree canned last night and my poor kiddo has loose stools today.    Her tummy must have bothered her starting 4am this morning.  I had her on the bed with us and she was restless.    She didn't want to wake me but she also didn't want to poop in bed (thank goodness !!!!).   When she kept her head lifted for a minute I knew something was up so took her out and she's had loose poop since then.   She's getting Hills ID today (I always keep a few cans on hand for these situations).

Poor Prancer; I hope she feels better soon.

Unless Prancer has allergies, you can feed something junky once in a while without fear of negative consequences. I have to warn you though. I picked up some Pedigree on my way home once because the power was out and I didn't want to open the refrigerator to get out one of his cooked meals. Floyd wouldn't touch it. I ended up going back to the store, and getting some meat and a potato that I could cook on the BBQ. Not exactly balanced, but acceptable.

Yeah, she doesn't have allergies but she's sensitive to fat which is why I got her the 'weight management' formula.   I guess its just too much organ meat for her or something.        the I/D will bind her up - gosh that stuff is like GLUE.   But its bland and she does well on it when she has a bad tummy.    Tomorrow she'll graduate to homemade rice with plain baked chicken.

I home cook and they get a small amount of Evo Red Meat Small Bites kibble too, but I like to keep wet food on hand - just in case........ Well, I've tried everything from the holistic store over the last year or so - EVERYTHING.... and they don't like any of it... BUT, they had Caesar's wet food - those little square plastic containers on sale at Walmart a while back, so I bought a couple and lo and behold, they like it. Lately, with money being tight and running out of the steak and chicken liver I had in the freezer, I've been giving them the wet food more often. In the last two weeks they've been itching pretty noticeably again so I *finally* checked the labels, which I can't believe I didn't do sooner because I'm so fussy about what I feed them - because THEY are fussy.... Guess what - the 3rd ingredient is wheat gluten.... I try to keep their diet wheat, corn, grain free - so, I guess I can't give Caesar's to them anymore or extremely rarely...... which sucks... I was so happy to have a backup food to give them!

I wouldn't worry if it's just a once in a while thing.  I bought a can of Pedigree once, the smell nearly made me pass out lol. It was wretched. Sophie enjoyed it though. Now, in a pinch, I just try to scrounge something up based on what I have in the fridge. Thursday the dogs had cottage cheese and chicken, they loved it.
