You can make smoothies with out using ice cubes, substitute frozen fruits. My family adores Pineapple, Orange, Mango, Banana smoothies so even in the RV I keep bags of frozen diced fruits and and whip up the best smoothies.
You can imagine how quickly we go through fruits here. Thankfully because of the way we raise the kids they would far rather have fresh fruit then candy 9 out of 10 times. ( Glancing at my grocery rects I have spent over 340.00 on just fresh fruits since Thanksgiving!) One the rare occaison I have bananas ripening too quickly I pop them in the freezer. Yes the skin will go black but in smoothies or breads and muffins it does not matter at all.
Plus the seeds from things like strawberry and kiwi are really good for you as a source of easy fiber. I also use a small amount of silken tofu in my smmothies, (It is the only place I use tofu) But a tablespoon per serving is an excellent source of protien for people. ( I will not feed my dogs soy products but it is decent for growing kids or stressed adults)
My favorite recipies are simple. I start with OJ, add the tofu, 1/2 cup of low fat milk, and then the fruits. Thick enough to be like a shake but not too thick to drink from a straw.
The thing about smoothies is they can replace a meal for folks like me who are not into coffee and heavy morning foods. Or they are the perfect afternoon pick me up at dogs shows. Enough energy to make you alert and perky without the heavy calories to pack on your hips. The Tampa dog show always has a vendor who sells amazing coffees in the AM and then smoothies and sandwitches all day long.
Smoothies are not always a family thing .... There are a couple of grown up smoothies I make in the summer that would blow you away, Like My Summer Song smoothies... easy to make, cubing watermelon and english cucumbers ( both seeded of course) with lime juice and sugar, Add a 1/2 part sake and 2 parts watermelon rum over ice in the blender and OMG!! they are light and really refreshing. I serve these at dog shows and friends go through the roof for them.
