Sandy training quirk...

    Sandy training quirk...

I just noticed this last night when I did a short training session with Sandy before bed.

Now when I train Sandy, I'm standing in the kitchen or where ever but I'm standing.  When I train Maze, I'm sitting or puttering or whatever.. But I'm not always standing.

I didn't think anything of it until last night. I was sitting on the edge of the bed doing focus training with Sandy and she just wasn't in to it. BUT as soon as I stood up, I had 100% focus. So now I know I have to keep standing when working with Sandy. Lol!

Actually, you just discovered that dogs learn in pictures!  You don't have to keep training Sandy while you are standing, you just have to retrain the same behavior from scratch while you are sitting:-))  Then, in both cases, you must begin training in different locations, too;-)

True enough.. Lol. When I'm sitting, Sandy is focused on the food, even if it's behind my back.  But when I'm standing, even outside (unless something startles her) I've got 95% focus. Guess I'll have to proof her while I'm sitting on the floor. Lol.

Taz is like that - if I'm standing, he blows me off. But, if I'm, kneeling he's into it! I have to be on his level!

Sam, on the other hand, will do most anything I ask, no matter where I'm at.

Walter is like this - instant downs if you are sitting down, but stand up?  He has no clue what you are talking about.  To a dog, it's not just a word.... EVERYTHING they "receive" at that moment together makes the cue.  Most dogs don't respond of you give the same cues they know when you are lying down.

I've started working with Sandy while sitting on the floor just so she knows. So far so good. Lol.

My most favorite training class yet we did lying down on the floor and getting our dogs to follow commands. That was amazingly fun and I recommend everyone do it!!  The trainer's reasoning.. if you're out walking and you trip and fall, you don't want the dog to think playtime like they normally would...

I never thought of that! Big Smile  I think I'll have to try that with Maze. Then again she already thinks I'm a dork.. Lol
