    CGC

    What are the requirements to get a CGC title? Does the dog have to be purebreed? Is there a certain age?

    Nope, Coke got one.  No breed or registry requirements.  I think the dogs have to be like six months?  From what I remember...

    * Perform a "sit" and a "down"

    * Put the dog in a "stay", walk 20 feet away, walk back to the dog (he may stand up but cannot run away or run to you)

    * Walk 10 feet from the dog and call him to you (recall)

    * Walk on loose leash (generally the instructor makes up a pattern with a right turn, left turn, and stop)

    * Walk on loose leash through a crowd (no pattern but you just wander through people.  The dog may look or sniff but not be pulling you, jumping up on people, or sniffing rudely like in someone's crotch)

    * Meeting a stranger - the dog is in a sit and someone comes to pet your dog.  He can stand up but can't shy away, jump up on the person, or pull you.  The person needs to be able to pet the dog, brush the dog, look in the dog's ear, and touch his paws.

    * Meeting a dog - you walk towards another person and dog with your dog's on the outside.  You stop in the middle (most people ask their dog to sit), shake the person's hand, and keep going.  The dogs should not be doing anything rude like trying to play, putting towards each other, etc

    * Three minute separation where you leave your dog with a stranger and go out of sight for three minutes.  The dog can be mildly upset but not howling or pulling to get away from the person.

    * Noise and visual distractions, like dropping a book, opening an umbrella, kids running past.

    If you go to the AKC.org website there is a Canine Good Citizen tab somewhere on the page.

    They have to be a year old.  Other than that no age, breed, or other requirements.  Foxy got his CGC when he was 17 !/2.  Muffin got his when he was 4 I think.  Billy was about 5 -- and all of those were simply "after I got them".

    SOME PetSmarts give the test.  (depends on whether they have someone who is a certified tester)  Often you can find the test done at dog events -- like AKC events, rally events, etc.

    You can re-take it as often as you need to with your dog.

    Oh that sounds great! I will ask Tracy about it and see if there is any way I can get Shailer a CGC. Hopefully there will be somebody in Greenville.
