Pilot at the dog show (wish good luck!)

So Tracy my mentor went to the dog show in Winston-Salem with Pilot and Lyric. The show last's three day, Fri. Sat. & Sun. She just send me an email she says:

"Pilot got winners dog today worth a point I will explain pts at another time. Here is a few pictures."

What ever that means it sounds neat! I can't wait for her to come back so that we can continue with practice/training.  She send me 5 pictures and I will post them once I upload them to photobucket.

                                                    Wish them good Luck!!!

That's fantastic! Pilot got one point, today. He'll need 13 more, to become a champion. He needs at least two majors, which are three to five point wins. You get points based on how many dogs you beat. It varies by breed, sex, and region. If you get best of breed, you get points for beating the specials.

It's complicated as heck, and I still don't have a clue what's going on. It sure is fun, though! LOL

Here are the pictures, she was unable to get any in the ring as her friends were in it at the same time so there was nobody to take pictures.

    This is Pilot.

She sort of explained it on email how the pt thing work with Aussies. She says "Pilot has 2 pts with a best of breed and a group 4 before he was a yr old" I don't know if that 2nd pt is counting the one he got today.

LOL Jennie!!  I feel ya! At my first show, I was showing Logan myself and was SUPER lucky the weim people were nice... cause it was BRUTAL.  I had no idea what was going on... I'm sure they had a good laugh at the idiots expense.  I knew I had to keep going back in, but I wasn't sure when (was it after the bitches or before... and I have to go in for Best of Breed... when is that?) I didn't even know to go to the table after he won! Oye... someday (not yet) I'll look back and laugh at it!

He needs 15 pts total.... and two majors (as Jennie explained) but if you get 15 points and you don't have those two majors, they are not finished until they have both majors under two different judges.  Each breeds points system is different.... if you get a 5 pts major it's big bragging rights as you have to beat a larger number of dogs than if you get a 3 pts major.  However anytime you win is fun! :)  You can go to the AKC to look up points and regions to figure out how many points she needs for a major.  Once he wins WD (Winners Dog) he competes in the Best of Breed ring against the Winners Bitch (WB) and the Specials for Best of Breed (BOB), Best of Winners (BOW) and Best of Opposite Sex (BOS).  If there had been 2 points in the Bitches and he'd gone BOW he'd have shared her points and so he would have had 2 pts, instead (for example).

It's very complicated and a lot of fun.... he is a handsome boy and congratulate her for us.

That's fabulous!  A puppy placing in Group is hard.  Particularly a popular breed such as Aussies (at least they are very popular out West here!) a BOB alone can be hard to get.  He must be very nice and she must be a great handler :)

    • Gold Top Dog

Wow, a group placement is impressive!! He must be a very nice Aussie. I don't know the breed, well, but that's awesome, to have a puppy placing in the group ring. He's just too handsome.

To get a best of breed, he was probably placed above specials. Specials are dogs who are already champions, and being shown for ranking and group placements. It's pretty cool for a young dog to do that well.

I know this all seems confusing but you catch on very quickly , after a while you will speak the shorthand too!!

From AKC 's Points and Division Schedule

"Any dog which shall have won fifteen points shall become a Champion of Record, if six or more of said points shall have been won at two shows with a rating of three or more championship points each and under two different judges, and some one or more of the balance of said points shall have been won under some other judge or judges than the two judges referred to above. "

Then you would go to the superintendent's site and look up your breed count AFTER entries have closed and been posted.

At the Jackson, Mississippi show next week we will hopefully have the following count on Saturday in RRS

    29  RHORIDGE  11-16- 0-1

This seems confusing too I know, but trust me... it isn't ,   11 dogs ( all ages unfinished) 16 bitches ( again all ages unfinished) 0 Champion Males and 1 Champion Female So from puppies of 6 months to whatever age as long as it is unfinished it will be in your competition.

Back to your AKC schedule... this is what Mississippi requires...

                                                                                                                                                           1 POINT          2 POINTS          3 POINTS             4 POINTS          5 POINTS

Dogs Bitches    Dogs Bitches    Dogs Bitches    Dogs Bitches      Dogs Bitches

                                                                    Rhodesian Ridgebacks . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .                2         2             6          6             9       10           11       14             16       21

IF everyone shows up it is a 4 point major for males and 5 pointer for females !!!

It is a lot more simple than Cricket rules, ( That is one truly confusing game!!)  If only 15 girls show up then it becomes a 4 point major, if only10 males you drop to a 3 pointer this is why Showing up when you enter is so darn important. People will be driving from Texas for the weekend and all of us want a Major ( or 2)  for our babies....

When circumstances happen and you can't make it , The courteous thing to do is let folks know. If our 5 point major dropped to under a 3 pointer than folks putting nearly 600 miles one way on their vehicle would be really appreciative of the chance to save some serious money if they only need majors. Also and this is a personal choice, I never move my finished dogs up during a show weekend unless I know there is a healthy surplus of dogs competing and I will not be breaking a major. It is for most of us equally crummy to show up , for example this is a 4 day show, on Thursday , pick up an elusive point and finish your dog then turn around and move them up possibly breaking the major for others. You can wait until you are sure of the attendance and count and move up if you want to.  In many breeds a younger dog who finishes at under 18 months  may need to wait a bit before taking on the Specials. They lack the body and maturity to make it a slam dunk. When they finish ( acquire all of the points needed to become a champion) you may choose to move them into the Best of Breed ring  OR  you may opt to let them stay home for a bit , grow up and dabble in the ring to keep his paw in so to speak...  Some judges love young dogs and have zero issue putting them up against seasoned champions.  Others barely hide their amusement or annoyance.. it is all up to you.

And a big BTW the reason for the above inforamtion is simple many, many of us have had dogs finish not with the required 15 points. But with a LOT more... why?? Majors breaking and then you take the win , you did not want of need the 1 or 2 points that you took but they are added in to the dog's total never the less.  Some times you gamble the judge will cross your dog over and give you the other sex' s points but that is another post for a different time.  Suffice it to say it is  perfectly acceptable. Just well "messier"so to speak.  High Five

That is almost the exact same thing Tracy said.

Here is a picture of him:

LOL, Lani. I'm very blessed with show buddies. There's always *somebody* ringside that I know. I don't know how or why, but I've done really well, with that, LOL. Somebody can always point me in the right direction, and point out where I'm screwing up (which I love!). If there isn't somebody I know, I look clueless enough that somebody will help me. I look *so* clueless, that people throw me their filler dogs *sigh*.

    • Gold Top Dog

    What's a filler dog?

    • Gold Top Dog

    Sowilu

    What's a filler dog?

It's someone who has several dogs entered to help build points. So, they enter some of their potentially lessor dogs to build points for the dog they are trying to finish.  I've seen this backfire a shocking amount of times considering I haven't been at this very long!  The Judge doesn't always agree that the dog that is hoping to be finished is superior!

It's fun to handle in those situation... talk about no pressure! :)  Has one of your fillers taken the points, yet Jennie?

Jennie you are lucky to have people around who help you out.  It's a giant, scary place without any friendly faces!!  I still cannot believe how lucky I was to randomly meet some nice folks at the show (day of!)  they could have easily thrown me under the bus.

    • Gold Top Dog

None that I've taken in have taken the points. Part of that is probably that I do fumble.... Especially with breeds I'm unfamiliar with. I'm sorry, but I cannot move fast enough to move a GSD, and I can't stack one, either, LOL. I've been warned that it makes people mad, though, LOL!

I didn't know, before I started showing, what I know now, but I'm really, really glad I have a toy dog. Gaiting her is... a brisk walk, LOL. I can't run. I just don't move like that. I have a friend begging me to show her GSD pup, for her. I'll groom him, but I *can't* move him. She's going to hire a handler, for him. He's a nice dog, but she isn't showing him well, either. It's nice to have a dog who, with training, shows herself. Ena free stacks, if it's not too cold, and she auto-gaits if I'm holding the lead like a show lead. It's pretty great.
