Feeding Low Fat Diets for Dogs w/Special Needs *Whole Dog Journal Article*

    http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/issues/11_12/features/Healthy-Low-Fat-Dog-Foods_16088-1.html

This is just a summary, you need to buy the issue or subscribe or find a friend who subscribes, but it's a REALLY good article, great info and coverage of the debate, even among vets, of the benefits and approaches to feeding these special needs dogs.  My local bath house subscribes and has back issues available for browsing and I think you *might* be able to get it through your local library or convince them to subscribe.  I've really enjoyed my subscription and gotten really good info from it.

Buying the article will cost you $10 and a year's subscription is only $20.

Our library had it - I'll have to take a look

$20 for a subscription? Huh? I just redid mine for $29 yesterday. I have been with WDJ for several years now.

Hmm.  I based my price quote on this:

    https://secure.belvoir.com/print-wholedogjournal/apps/order_flow_wrapper.php?prod_offer=tc&prod_dir=print&source_code=GL_200812

This is my first year.  I guess the price goes up on renewal, which doesn't seem fair somehow.

I just let my subscription lag because although it's an excellent periodical, I think the price is a little high. I didn't realize they charged more for renewal. For a different magazine, I told them I wasn't willing to pay more than a new subscriber and they dropped the price for me.

I do miss getting it and will probably restart the subscription one day soon.

So what did the article say about feeding a low fat diet ?

Prancer MAY have some pancreatic issues so I keep her fat at 2x the NRC.   I only use foods where the manufacturer will send me the complete nutritional analysis so that I know the REAL amount of fat and protein in a food (not the "minimums";).    I use Core Reduced Fat for kibble (1/3rd of her diet), and Core Senior, Lamb, Fish and Duck canned (another 1/3rd of her diet), the remaining 1/3rd is fresh foods (mostly low fat meats except on Senior and Fish canned food days where we have more wiggle room on the fats so that I can give her more variety on the meats).

It was 4 or 5 pages and very information dense, so I don't really feel comfortable paraphrasing or summarizing.  If you have a dog with these issues, it really is worth a look, either by purchasing just the article online or looking for it at your library.   It did talk about how to figure out the real fat content in food (with conversion formulas) and discussed the role fiber plays in pancreatic stimulation (which I didn't know) as well as discussing not feeding dogs a too low fat diet and the role that fat plays and why it's important even for dogs who have low tolerances for fat in the diet (such as my Indie).

Ugh, the price is higher to resubscribe. I have been that for several years. Time to complain! Hey its America right? Haha
