Healthy, homemade treats!

    Healthy, homemade treats!

Sam is such a piggy! In about 3 weeks he's chowed down on $20 worth of treats! So, to keep from blowing all my money on dog treats - I'd love to start making my own. Can all of you guys that feed home-made or raw food help me out with some recipes?

I tried something new today. Somebody gave my mom lots of big sweet potato so I grabed two of them and cut them in strips about an inch thick and I placed them in the oven at 250 degrees for 3 hours. What did I get? Things that look like sticks but Shailer loved them. I suggest when cutting the sweet potato cut it thicker because it will dry up and become smaller.

I bet Sam'd love them! He had a ball with an apple the other day, so he should like that.

Shailer loves apples too he will do about anything for them.

My little girls love dried sweet potatoes, too, and you can do that with peices of meat. Just don't do it with fish! Fish stinks too much, LOL.

I get the Gerber mini fruits, for toddlers, too. They're already super tiny, and good for training treats. Emma loves the apples (I put some bits of liver in the bag, and the flavor kind of blends) and Ena is CRAZY for the strawberry banana (banana is her FAV flavor!).

Bites of cheese seem to be popular, too. Emma doesn't tolerate cow's milk, so I use goat cheese. Yes, she's rotten to the core.

I've heard that microwaving hot dog peices for too long dries them out enough that they'll go in your pocket, but I've never done it. I just buy turkey dogs, and chop them up tiny, and put them in a baggie. Emma's a big fan. She's my meat girl. Liverworst and hot dogs.

I'd rather make them at home in a nice sized batch, and store them. It's probably save me more money. Plus he could probably get to lick the bowl if it was a cookie mix....hehe!

I make my own for Maze because she has allergies and I got tired of reading labels..

Recipe is... (bare with me, I'm going from memory and it can be changed as needed.)

    5 cups of Flour

    2 eggs

    1 cup of powdered milk

1 cup oil ( I use sunflower oil)

    1/2 cup oil (separate measuring)

1 tablespoon (or to your liking) garlic powder

    1 tablespoon Cinnamon powder

    1 tablespoon Dried Parsley flakes

    (I've also used Italian seasoning)

Mix in a giant bowl ( I suggest using your hands) add the 1/2 cup oil as needed to keep it rolling nice.  You can roll it flat and use a cookie cutter. But I just roll it in to little balls, that way I control the size of treats.

Bake for 20 minutes, let cool and I suggest freezing some. They will go mouldy if left out on the counter.. *Lesson learned.. Lol*

Maze has turned down roast beef for these, and Sandy has just started loving them. They're handy and easy to pocket and all dogs I've met have loved them. So if you do make them, be aware of Sam becoming addicted to it. Lol.

Thanks oranges! I've got all of that stuff in my house already(I think). I'll cut the recipe in half first to see if Sam likes it!

    • Gold Top Dog

Yeah this recipe does make a large batch if you roll the dough by hand. But it's handy. Smile Enjoy.

Big ops on my part -- I forgot the eggs today! Opps! Well, I added canned dog food, so made that evens it out. LOL!

    • Gold Top Dog

Lol. Yeah the eggs are just to bind all the dry ingredients together. Smile I haven't tried it with canned dog food yet. I'll have to try that next after I do the fish cookies.

I think Sam would like these too!!!!

    Salmon Treats

    Ingredients:

    • 1 can salmon, canned, pink
    • 1/2 cup chopped parsley
    • 3 eggs -- shells included
    • 1/2 cup sesame seeds -- ground in coffee grinder
    • 1/2 cup flax seeds -- ground in coffee grinder
    • 2 cups potato flour -- (2 to 3)

    Preparation & Cooking

Put these ingredients into a food processor, mix VERY WELL. Pour potato flour through the opening while the motor is running. I can't tell you exactly how much, but I would guess about 2-3 cups. When the dough forms, like a pie crust, and rolls into a ball it is ready to take out. Dump this mess onto potato floured counter or board. Knead more flour into this and when it is a rolled out cookie consistency, it is ready to roll out into about 14 inch thick. I use a pizza cutter to roll our long strips and then cut crosswise to make small squares . If you want FANCY you may use a cookie cutter. Bake on cookie sheets, sprayed Pam or line the sheet with parchment paper. I put in as many as will fit. Usually two whole cookie sheets suffices. I bake this in a 375º oven for 20 min. Turn and rotate the cookie sheets and bake about 10 more minutes. You can make them as soft or as hard as you want.

    Scrumptious Carob Bake

    Ingredients:

    • 6 cups white rice flour
    • 1/8 cup peanut oil
    • 1/8 cup margarine -- safflower oil type
    • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
    • 4 ounces carob -- chips, melted 1 cup water
    • 1/4 cup molasses
    • 1/2 cup powdered milk

    Preparation & Cooking

Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add remaining ingredients and mix until blended. Dough will be stiff. Chill. Roll dough on a greased cookie pan and cut into shapes 1/2 inch thick. Bake at 300 for 1 hour.

    Surprise Snacks

    Ingredients:

    • 1/4 cup hot water
    • 8 chicken bouillon cube -- or beef
    • 1 package dry yeast
    • 1 1/2 cups tomato juice
    • 2 cups flour -- divided
    • 2 cups wheat germ
    • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

    Preparation & Cooking

Place the hot water and bouillon cubes in a large mixing bowl and mash with a fork. Sprinkle yeast over this mixture and let stand about 5 minutes, until yeast is dissolved. Add the tomato juice, half the flour and the wheat germ and stir to form a smooth batter. Gradually work in the remaining flour and the whole wheat flour with your hands.
Divide the dough into 4 balls. Roll each ball out on a floured board to about 1/4" thick. Cut into shapes and place on ungreased cookie sheets about an inch apart. Bake in a 325F. oven for 1 hour, then turn off the heat and let biscuits dry in oven for about 4 hours or overnight with the door propped open slightly. Store in airtight container.

I use the following: liver boiled in garlic and anise, then water pressed out, cut into strips, 225 with convection oven for an hour to 1.30 hours chick breast .. cooked in butter with garlic and rosemary and cut into strips white cheese.. mozzarella beef heart, just boiled and cut up. Mackerel treats (I used this recipe given to me by one of my agility instructors) 1 can of mackerel, one package of graham crackers (there's 3 in a box) put in food processor, bind with 1 egg, cook at 350 for 20-30 minutes. Use a pizza cutter to cut into pieces. Worked great at the trial and in class. a lot of dogs stopped as they walked by my stuff or me. Green tripe in a 3oz container! I use to make liver or chicken cookies but that was so much work.

Sam seems to like them - he wags his tail like crazy whenever I pick up the bowl of treats. Maybe he'd like them more with more flavor then flour!
