    little PO'd with canidae...

Okay, here's the situation: I've been feeding canidae for a really long time. i think it's a good quality food, for a decent price. My dogs have done well on it, and i recommend it to everyone. They have their own frequent buyer program that is independent of my pet store. Well about a month ago, i went in and tried to buy my usual 40 lb bag. They don't make 40 lb bags anymore, so i had to buy 35 lbs. I asked the lady working if even though i bought 9 40 lb bags of canidae, and my 10th was 35 lbs, if i only got a 35 lb bag for my free bag. She said yes. I was kind of annoyed with that, considering i had already bought 9 40 lb  bags. Not to mention 35 lbs is the same price as the 40 was! Well, whatever. I got over it. So, i went in for my free bag the other day, but i had lost my original canidae FBP envelope. I asked for a new one. Turns out, they changed the rule and i have to buy 12 bags now. I know i might be being petty, but that's ridiculous that i can't be grandfathered in or something. I've thought about writing the company. What do you all think?

    I would write them!

There was only one place here in town where I could buy it, and it was a hassel, turns out Kord did not do well on it so it worked out. I am still down to only one place that carries his food though, and I recently wrote Purina telling them that the price was getting to be a bit much and they sent me a ton of coupons for dog and cat food.

I think it's time for a new food!  They are not the same food or company that they used to be.  I was just talking to someone who adopted a dog from me awhile ago and they are frustrated because the dog did so well on Canidae that they were convinced to switch from grocery store stuff to Canidae.  Now it is really a different food and they are searching for something that is similar to the old formula they used (no high-gluten grains, easy to digest).

A lot of people are having good luck with the Diamond Naturals Lamb and Rice if they used the old Canidae Lamb and Rice.  I know some people are wary of Diamond but they manufacture several premium foods now, including Canidae.  I figure why pay for a pretty label, basically?

I don't like them anymore either.    I tried to get the complete nutritional analysis for their foods.   They said they only give it out to vets.  I had my vet call them to get it - they wanted them to sign an agreement that they wouldn't give the information to anyone (including me !).   I stopped buying it that day - I won't buy ANY food where they can't or won't provide the complete nutritional analysis.

You can thank rising fuel costs for that. It costs more for the truck to deliver it. With diesel between $4.50 and $5.00 a gallon. There is not one thing we do in our civilization that does not require the use of fuel. The forklifts in the warehouse run on propane. The propane is delivered by a 5 ton bobcat that uses diesel. Everything has to be brought to and from the plant by diesel trucks. Delivered to your store by diesel trucks. And the people in the store have to pay $3.50 to $4.50 a gallon of gas or diesel to get to work.

We can solve this by not buying oil from OPEC. Drill and process our own fuel and reduce energy costs significantly.

    Off my soapbox, now.

I thought this thread was going to be about the formula change.  A few weeks ago I opened a new bag only to find a different kibble!  I'm still using it b/c even though the prices have gone up, so have all the other food prices.

I'm still using it also.  I agree, the price of everything has gone up.  I'm not shocked that the bags are five pounds smaller and the same price (although I noticed it to and was a bit confused).      I spend sooooo much more on food for our family now than we ever have, so I expected it would carry over to dog food to.

Scroll down for the lowdown on Canidae and the new formulations.  Too bad such a formerly good company decided to take the low road.  I would have paid a higher price if they kept the ingredients the same, and the bag sizes the same.  They aren't fooling anyone...

Precise Foundation formula is quite nice, as well, for a very decent price. My friend who used to feed Canidae (and her dogs had bad reactions to the new formula) has switched to that, and likes it a lot. It's a round kibble, with a hole in the middle. The dogs LOVE the feel of it.

We had just switched to Canidae a couple of months before the formula change.  DH bought the last bag and dumped it into the bin before I saw it.  The next time I fed the boys I asked DH if he was sure he bought the right stuff because it looked so different.  He said that he was sure even though the bag was smaller than what I had told him - huh.

The boys have not reacted well to the new formula and the proof is in the poop!  Morrison is even loosing weight and he is the wrong dog for that.  You are right, they haven't fooled anyone.

On to the next brand to try out...

I don't think anyone understands completely, but these "good" companies are changing formulations so you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for a good food anymore!  Don't blame the companies for trying to take "the low road," blame our economy at the moment.

I emailed canidae. They are sending me a voucher for a 35# and a 5# bag. Easier than i expected!

regarding the formula change...my dogs have done well on it, but Kaiser's poop has been very hard, and he's having trouble with that issue.

    • Gold Top Dog

I should have stopped using it when I knew it wasn't doing so well for them.  I was being stubborn and cheap and wanted to finish the bag...my bad.

Poor Monroe has had such runny, goopy, light coloured poop that even he can't stand it!  By the end of the bag it was going right through him and he had a few accidents in the carpeted and finished basement.  Needless to say, I'm glad that we have a carpet cleaner.

Within two days of switching to Wellness they are back on schedule and have nice, firm bms.  I was really happy with Canidae and would have paid more for it.  Now I pay more for Wellness instead...who lost in this game?

We were doing OK with the new formula for a few weeks and then both dogs got terrible diarrhea.  Did a bland diet and now we are trying California Natural Lamb and Rice.  Coke is sensitive and I think will do better on a "limited ingredient" diet.

I agree.  We have to remember that these companies need to be profitable in order to stay in business, just like everyone else.
