    Eukanuba Naturally Wild

Has anyone else seen the new Eukanuba Naturally Wild? They're selling it at the Pet Supplies Plus we buy Apollo's Canidae at. Well, today they were giving out free samples so I took a couple and gave him a small handful of the Venison/Potato. He loved it, but then again, he eats anything you put in front of him, lol.

Here's the Eukanuba link to Naturally Wild:

Since I'm a nutrition dummy, what do you think of the ingredients? Good/Bad? I'm thinking of trying the New Zealand Venison and Potato Formula. I'm just looking to try something new for him since he's been eating the same thing (Canidae Regular Formula) since I got him.

    Ingredients
Salmon, Brewers Rice, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Potato, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Chicken Meal, Fish Meal (source of fish oil), Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dried Egg Product, Dried Beet Pulp, Chicken Flavor, Brewers Dried Yeast, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Ascorbic Acid, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of vitamin B1), Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Choline Chloride, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), DL-Methionine, Rosemary Extract

It looks okay but why do they have to throw that brewer's rice in there?

The thing about Euk is that it's so pricey.  Did you see how much they want for it?  Since their regular formulas are about what the super premiums cost, I can just imagine how expensive this is.

Try checking out this site to help you learn how to judge foods for yourself:

Then you can take a peek at the nutritional analyses on this site (though they wouldn't have the latest foods yet) - I don't agree 100% with their ratings (there's plenty of good foods in the "five star" category and there's even a few in the "four star";), but it's a handy dandy place to compare brands and get a roundup of all that is available.

I would be intersted in feedback also.  I have a mix that only does well on average kibble and this looks better than some of the other foods out there.

Sometimes there really are dogs who do best on "trashy" foods for one reason or another.  I had one dog who needed a diet with corn in it.  The food he did best on was Bil-Jac Select.  I finally guessed he had trouble processing linoleic acid, and when I simply supplemented that instead, he did well on any food.

Some dogs need high levels of insoluble fiber.  Using a reduced fat or a senior or diet version of a food might be an answer for those dogs.  I used to use Canidae Platinum to transition dogs from grocery store foods to more concentrated super premium diets.  Diamond Naturals makes a senior food that is very similar to the reformulated Platinum now.  I've also used that one.

Some senior foods also are formulated to be easy to digest - the Platinum is definitely in that category, and so are all of Bil-Jac's formulas.  Californa Natural makes foods that are super simple, just a few ingredients, for dogs that don't do well on the "kitchen sink" formulas.

Most of these foods are at least in the Eukanuba price range, and most are much less expensive.

So one doesn't need to throw the baby out with the bath water.

I think it was something like $38 for 30lbs.

    Thanks for the helpful websites!

The price they charge is outrageously expensive for a totally grain based product. Brewers rice is crap. sorghum is a form of sugar, barley causes allergic reactions in many dogs ( including mine ).  WHERE is the meat ???? The salmon listed becomes virtually NON-EXISTANT after processing and the trace of chicken meal is WAY too far down the ingredient list to be substantial.   Just another junk food trying to jump on the holistic bandwagon by taking advantage of gullible, naive pet owners who really know nothing about pet food or nutrition.

A fool and their money ... IMO. There are tons of  HIGH QUALITY foods out there that cost the same or less.
