    Anyone using Before Grain?

I am not using the dry food but I have a case of canned and I am having great results.  I wondering if anyone uses the dry?

you know it's Merrick brand? the company with a long history of poor quality control and a failure to correct their problems?

yeah but so does Diamond and a bunch of people rave about TOTW.  Companies can change.

Oh yeah, I know its a Merrick product.  I like most of their products, but my lab mix doesnt do well with their other dry kibble but has always done well with their canned food.  I'll have to get one of those small 1lb bags and try it out.

As far as I'm aware, the B.G. cans are for supplemental feeding only ...? i.e. they're pure meat, nothing else - so not a standalone food. Just wanted to clarify that in case of any misunderstandings.

I have got a bag of the dry (Chicken formula) but am not feeding it at the moment because it contains yeast and I'm testing for yeast intolerance. However, my guys both like the flavor very much (it's rare for the two to agree on liking one particular kibble!). Whereas they detest the TOTW (go figure). I didn't notice any problems when feeding the dry - poops looked normal.

The only thing I don't like about it (apart from being a Merrick's product ... but honestly, I try to judge each food on its own merits and on the available information these days) is that there's a lot of oil/fat sprayed on the outside. That's kinda outdated kibble manufacturing IMO. Wellness manages to make their CORE kibble non-greasy/non-sticky and it still has a decent fat content.

I would also give the BG the thumbs-up on packaging; that's increasingly important to me, with concerns over plastics leaching toxins etc.

I know there haven't been a lot of enthusiastic comments so far about the dry BG - but from where I'm standing, it's a minor miracle:

    • it pleases the finicky types
    • no digestive upsets or loose stools

I can't see anything amiss with a combination of the BG kibble + some of the BG cans for toppers, if your dog likes the food and does well on it.

yeah, but Merrick has a long list of multiple serious quality control problems that have killed dogs and they DON'T do anything about it. Who cares what wonderful ingredients and lovely packaging they have if the food might have metal spikes in it that will kill your dog?

Far as I know Diamond had one serious quality control problem, ever.

I'm not a big Merrick fan but my dogs have been turning their noses up at their regular foods... TOTW, Canine Caviar, Fromm Surf & Turf, Timberwolf, CORE, Iinstinct, etc.  They actually eat this stuff WITHOUT canned added.  They NEVER eat just dry kibble. They seem to really like this stuff. I don't particularly care for the extremely low kcals/cup because it costs almost DOUBLE to feed in comparison :(
