Best High Quality Kibble for Itchy Skin

My girls have been on Orijen Fish formula for a while now and it's time for a change. The majority of their diet is home cooking, but they get about a quarter cup of of dry per day each - if that. The local holistic store has an entire wall of high quality samples - every imaginable kind. It's overwhelming and each sales person at the store has their own opinion of what is *best.* I am leaning toward EVO Red Meat Small Bites, but I'm not sure if that is the best for the issues mentioned above. I know they like the taste cuz I sampled them with it. Oh, and we are grain free, so that's important. Thanks!

Actually, I think EVO RM would be a great way to go with itchy skin- not only grain free, but also chicken free. Penny is also on Orijen (original adult) and has been on EVO in the past. I've have nothing but good things to say about Innova! I've never tried the red meat formula, simply because it's more expensive. However, when I switched Penny off of Nutro NC to Innova EVO, her dandruff went away and her coat never looked better.

I don't think EVO has enough omega 3 and 6's to help with itchy skin (at least thats my experience) unless you supplement with other oils.

I would recommend Taste of the Wild b/c it is grain free and doesn't have flaxseed, sunflower oil, brewers yeast, etc (which can be allergy triggers for some dogs---EVO uses sunflower oil. ) I'm guessing your dogs have food allergies? Is that why they are itchy and need a grain free food? My dog is the same way, and I think trial and error is the best way to figure out what food is best. If they do fine on EVO then thats great, but some dogs (mine) can be allergic to ingredients in even the grain free foods.

Yep, that's it. I don't think we've tried Taste of the Wild yet. Layla had a reaction to the flaxseed oil capsule I gave her the other night, it was really weird, so I will definitely be on the lookout to avoid that going forward. Thx! Any other suggestions??? Taste is important for me as I want to feed them something that they enjoy which can be difficult when they are eating steak, salmon, etc...........

Taste of the Wild comes in.... 3 or 4 different flavors, so that should do it, for taste. You can buy small bags, and rotate.

How about Orijen 6 fresh fish?

I thought I'd suggest maybe a simple formula like since you like Natura California Natural--OMG, I'm drawing a blank, but I think that's the correct name.

I agree with sticking with something very simple (limited ingredients).

Because unless you know the specific allergens, you're just guessing at what might be triggers.  And it's very easy to be wrong.  A limited ingredient food means less chance to react to something.

I'd consider California Natural, Wellness Simple Foods or one of the Natural Balance allergy formulas.  But I don't have issues with grains (other than avoiding the one my dog is allergic to).

For itchiness due to allergies, I would try a very simple diet like California Natural or Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet.  It would depend on which ingredient(s) cause the itching though,

    Now don't laugh at me....

Purina Pro Sensitive Skin and Stomach.

It worked wonders on Kord. And the ingredients are really not that bad.

I dunno about the red meat one... beef seems to really inflame my girls (bichons) and we get itchy skin, yeasty feet and ears.

We've settled with PetGuard Lifespan for the moment.  It's basically chicken/brown rice.  It has chelated minerals, which I think, makes their coats just bloom beautifully.  I'm really really pleased with how it's working out, especially since they removed the corn in the formula.

Now the girls have nice, stain-free faces and feet, nice coat (as does gobie the minpin terror), no gas or tummy upset. Doing pretty well.

In theory, Cal Natural, Natural Balance Allergy formulas,  and Wellnesss Simple Solutions should work, but they all have flaxseed, and the OP said her girls reacted to a flaxseed oil capsul.

Flaxseed is a very sneaky ingredient that is in a bunch of foods, even allergy formulas. I know a lot of dogs have allergic reactions to flaxseed.

I don't *think* Cal Natural has flax. I remember, specifically, a Bulldog in my store that was allergic to flax.... Of course, it has grains, and she doesn't want to feed grains.
