    One Meal for Large Breeds??!?!?!?!?

I always used to fed my dog two meals breakfast & dinner. And currently I am feeding him breakfast due to weight loose. But my flat mate who also has a dog, a German shepherd bitch believes that large breeds should only be feed once a day. He muttered something about their digestive system or something?!

So what is it folks is this true should large breed dogs only be feed once a day? Or is two meals better?

I'd never risk loading Cleo's belly with over 6-7 CUPS of food at one time. She'd never eat that much at a sitting, anyways. Talk about setting a dog up for bloat.

I feed Lillie 3 times a day. For breakfast she gets 2 cups of dry food and an egg. For lunch she gets a chicken leg and thigh. For supper she gets 2 cups of dry food and some yogurt. She weighs 55lbs. I am working on putting some muscle on her because she looks skinny but is at her idea weight.

I knew it, cause with horses it's better to feed less & more often. Figured it would the same with the dogs. I have been feeding my dog 2 cups in the morning & 4 cups at night.

Is 4-5 cups at night too much? Should I possiably advise my flat mate against this?

Bloat is that similar to colic in a horse?

    • Gold Top Dog

Yes bloat is the same as colic. Can you feed your dog 3 times a day?

Not 3 times but 2 times not a problem, the owner of the other dog does work from home. So we could in theory but I am moving to a place by myself in two weeks.

Maybe you could give 3 cups at each feeding. Are you trying to get weight on or off?

Well the german shepherd is a good weight so I guess just maintain for her, but my dog is currently under weight due to stress etc. He does this trick at least once a year argh! Goes from a perfect weight maybe just needing a little more weight then drops it. He is a very hard dog to get then keep in a good weight. Always looks healthy like great coat etc but just light.

What king of exercise does your dog get?

at the mo it's a bit varied due to winter/rain. But I try to make sure he gets a walk in the morning around a few blocks  & at night if it's not too wet & the park isn't water soaked we take them there for a good hoon & play frisbee. Or if the park is soaked we walk around the blocks for at least 20-30 mins. And weekends he gets to charge around the farm where my horse is. Currently he doesn't come with me after work cause cost of travel/time but soon we will be living there and the walking around there is amazing. Looking forward to that has my dog is very high energy.

I'm not comfortable feeding ANY dog only once a day.  Small ones can have blood sugar issues without regular feeding and large ones don't need to be eating a day's worth of food at once.  JMHO.

And for your dog, I'd feed 3 cups in the morning and 3 cups in the evening and suppliment with Satin Balls, probably.  (It's not a brand, it's a recipe.  Google it. Smile)  They are good for adding weight to a dog who needs a little extra help in that department.  I'm not actually sure how many I'd give in that situation, though...I have made them for Ben but only as an occasional supplement, as in once every week or two he'd get one.

Wicked thank you, I have googled it they seem simple enough. I guess one an evening wouldn't be too much would it? I guess once I get him up to weight I can cut it down. Cause I would say at the mo he is at least 11 pounds under weight which I am not very happy about. He should be around 77 pounds but he has dropped quite a bit in the last month.

Might it be the heat? Some dogs don't have as much appetite in Summer.

Shadow eats once or twice a day during the week. When I leave in the morning, around 6:15, he's not hungry. So, he eats when I get home in the afternoon. Sometimes, he will eat again later in the evening. On days off, he will eat twice a day, around 9 in the morning and around 4:30 in the afternoon. But he only eats about a cup to 1 1/2 cups at a time, due to his metabolism.

It's winter here at the mo, my dog feels the cold a lot we live in a really old villa that is almost impossiable to heat. Plus he is terrified of storms so he stresses weight off with that. Shakes and becomes almost unconsoliable when it's stormy managed to wedge himself between my bed & the wall the other night that was interesting.

I'd personally work on desensitizing him to the storms first off.  The satin balls are a good thing for a short term, but they are very high fat and carb.

FWIW, my dogs eat once a day, by choice.  Its hot here and they don't feel like eating much during the day so they eat first thing in the morning when its still cool.  During the winter they ate their main meal in the morning and then had a snack in the evening, but not enough to constitute a meal.  My dogs eat raw though so that might have something to do with it.
