Yet another raw feeding question, sorry...

Ok, so I've started Kane on raw as of yesterday. He loves it! Since the premade doesn't have RMB's, I want to give him a little extra to clean his teeth. For a 30lbs., moderately active adult, would a chicken leg quarter be enough for a day's meal? Drumstick? Thanks everyone.

Ok, this may be a dumb question but by chicken leg quarter, do people mean the leg with back attached?  Thats enough for my smaller dog for the day almost, but I also add a meatball and a little piece of liver on those days.

You could do a rec bone too.  Something he can't consume, like a marrow bone.  Great for teeth, but not really a meal.  Plus you can take it away and throw it in the fridge for the next day if you feel so inclined.

Just FWIW, my dog cannot consume RMBs. She's on premade raw, and her teeth stay really nice.

They *are* lots of fun, though, for dogs who tolerate them. Weigh a couple of peices of chicken, and see how big they are. Compare that to what he eats on a daily basis.

I would prefer not to because it's too messy. I give him a bully stick after each meal and he gnaws on that for 10-12 minutes, would that help clean his teeth?

I give mine bully sticks sporadically, and she likes them. I don't know how much they help with teeth. It's just anecdotal evidence, though, and she may just have genetically clean teeth. I have no idea. I know nothing of her lines.  I do think that the reduced carb content and increased enzymes have *something* to do with it, but IDK how much.

How do folks feed these whole chicken quarters without smearing the entire floor with raw chicken juice? Should I clean his paws after he's handled raw food?

teach him to eat on an old towel.

I feed in the crates.  or outside.  If they eat in crates, I just wipe them out quick with a paper towel and a spray bottle of bleach water that I keep right there.

My dogs will eat RMB's, but not raw chicken. I'm curious, is the diet you are considering nutritionally sound? Would you give a multi-vitamin as well? It just doesn't seem like enough......

I think they make a big difference!  I have a girl I got at 9 1/2 months old and her teeth had lots of tartar on them.  I had to scrape and brush for days.  She is now 15 months old.  I haven't brushed her teeth since and no more tartar, the only difference is that she gets bully sticks now.

I know that the RMB's help to keep their teeth super clean, Abbie is 3 and Layla is 2 and I've seen other dogs their age who's teeth are in awful condition. I do think the bully sticks help as well, my girls always have those around and we get the large tendons too, those are great and don't splinter.
