Nice.  A good example of how different Schutzhund is from police work and personal protection work.

Gotta love those crazy mals! :)

We call em Gators for a reason Big Smile.  They are a first line of defense and worth their weight in gold when well handled and trained.

I thought this was awesome - and also helped me to further understand how intense a Mal is/can be Surprise

Oh yes, the Mal intensity....there needs to be a new word for it b/c it's SO MUCH MORE intense than even the most owner-proclaimed "intense" dogs, lol.  If it helps to understand their intensity, our new trainer (for SchH) is a retired state trooper that trains police K9s and he says "no Mals" in our club because they are too crazy!  Coming from someone who trains police dogs, lol.

They are extremely intense, but they really are not crazy. For your SchH trainer to claim that they are too crazy to be in SchH club indicates that he doesn't understand the breed. The level of intensity is comparable to a border collie working sheep, but add to that more prey drive, fight drive, defense drive. They are high drive, high energy, very, *very* fast and very eager to please. They tend to be missing an off switch. They also are affectionately called melonheads.

Rats I could not bring it up....dumb rural server  grumble grumble grumble,,,,, anywho  I have to guess and all I can add is our local KC in it's very begining ( sadly it did not survive the local mentality)  But we had an auction to see who could get "stopped" by a beautiful police trained Belgin Malnois....   My kids thought I really wanted to win the chance so they all put togther theri money and wahla  I won!!! And on local tv....

Hours before I was there feeding this dog treats and cookies he really seemed to "like" me ..... then they padded me up and gave me instructions...hey  Jaegger and I have an understanding .... right guy wink. wink .... mentally sending the image of many manu treats  for kisses.....tail wagging  sweet faced  right up till they gave the send and stop command .... this sweet little 65 pounder guy  adjusted MY attitude and respect for what they can do.... even heavily padded I was brouggh to the ground and bruised for weeks .... after the release command there

he was ..... kisses and looling for cookies..... I will NEVER underestimate these dogs !!!

I think the lack of off switch is what brought on the comment.  He said it partly in jest - ALL working breeds are welcome in the club, but he's had more than one bad/frustrating experience with Mals.  According to him, GSDs are just "easier" and are as effective, so that's what he's sticking with.  Someday I *will* have a Mal....

Got to be a different and better way to accomplish what the police want to accomplish.  Makes no sense to me for anyone to teach a dog to attack a human.  I don't like seeing dogs used that way at all.  Poor dogs.

Bonita I do not envy you!  These dogs go at a padded perpetrator by, leaping over a car, or directly into the car window etc.  Extraordinary stuff.  fast, quick and once latched on they don't like letting go

People keep thinking bigger is better...*sheesh* those people haven't met a mal...Amazing what momentum can do.

No need to feel bad for the dogs - they enjoy it. These are dogs that have been bred to do this kind of work, the foundation training is a huge game of tug. There are all sorts of ways police can accomplish what they need to do. The average police dog on the streets, outside of training, gets 0-1 bite. In some areas he might get more, but many don't. They are incredibly useful, and often all the police need to do is announce that they're sending a dog and the criminals give up. They are a wonderful partner. There have been many attempts to use other tools to accomplish the same things, but in the end, many times the dog is the best choice for getting the job done. At the end of the day, the police dog goes home to be the family pet.

The presence of the dog along side a policeman with a firearm should be enough.  What disturbed me about the video is at the sound of gun fire, the dog would go to the source and attack the human.  I can't image teaching a dog to go toward gunfire and be in harms way.  The dog does not know the danger it is in, but the human very well knows.   Whats missing is the choice to be brave.

thank you for posting this, it is incredible to watch these dogs in action and something that we do not often get to see.
