Chicken Wing Causes Distress

    Chicken Wing Causes Distress

I have a 14 week old puppy, a Westie. I give my other dogs raw chicken, pork neck bones, and beef rib bones. They have eaten bones for two years with no problems.

I wanted to introduce the puppy to raw by giving him the middle section of a chicken wing. He gulped it down and started to whimper and he layed down. He sounded scared and hurt. I opened his mouth and stuck my finger in as far as I could reach, thinking that maybe he was choking, but I felt nothing.

I let him go and he went to his bed and layed down, still crying. After about a minute (it seemed much longer), he got up and ran around playing like nothing ever happened.

This was a very scary experience, and needless to say I am nervous about giving him rmb's again. Why do you thing he cried? Would you forget raw for this guy? Or would something bigger than a wing section be better, to force him to chew it? Or maybe freezing it would slow him down.

It sounds like he just... swallowed too much. I'd give him something much bigger (like... the whole chicken) and give it to him for just a little while, then put it up (or let another dog work on it.... whatever).

One thing you can do is smash the bone with a hammer, divide it with a cleaver, and give half at a time for a while until his system adjusts to the new food.  That's what I do with cats just starting out.  A wing section is a pretty big chunk for a wee pup like that.
