Maze won't eat raw meat...

    Maze won't eat raw meat...

I've been wanting to add some raw in with her diet so I picked up some chicken legs to give her for dinner the other night. And she wouldn't touch them! I had to cut them up in small chunks (bone included) and hand feed them to her...She's still not sure about them..

BUT! I can get beef liver and hearts fairly cheap and I figured it can't hurt her to add it to her dinner a couple times a week. But she'll have nothing to do with it. Won't even sniff it...I've picked up her bowl and put it in the fridge until next feeding she wouldn't touch it even after 3 days..

She'll eat raw eggs (without the shell) so she's been getting that 3 times a week but I'm really wanting to add meat in to her diet. My long term goal is to stop feeding kibble all together.

So any advice on how to get her more interested in the meat or is she just not a meat eating dog? Lol

To get Mazy started, you can lightly sear the chicken leg just enough to enhance the smell while leaving most of the meat raw and not cooking the bone. If she eats that, then you can see if she'll eat it raw. Good luck; I hope this works for you.

Maybe she wants it cooked?  Lol. I thought all dogs loved meat raw or not. I know Lillie absolutely looks forward to her raw chicken legs when I can get them cheap.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try that next time I pick some up. Will that work with the liver as well?

Maze loves cooked meat but I won't feed her the bone. So I'm trying to get her in to something that satisfies the chewing and is good for her.

When I gave her the chicken leg, she gave this look of "What are you trying to do??!! Kill me?!" She ate it in the end, begrudgingly, but I had to cut it up in small chunks and hand feed it to her.. Not fun. Lol

You're welcome; it should work for the liver. Jessie will eat raw meat but for some reason she prefers RMB's with the meat cooked as I described.

Sweet. Again thanks! I'm going shopping next week so I'll have to try it.

My girls, golden retrievers, will hardly touch raw meat  I have gotten them to eat a few chicken hearts, but they will not touch raw liver, ground beef, etc.  And they were even reluctant to eat the hearts.

Maze loves ground beef but she'll only eat it if thats what I'm eating that night.. She's weird. Lol.

glad coco is not the only one!  it took a while too...a few times of searing the outside lightly.... and now she'll only eat CERTAIN things raw.... ie. she LOVES NV medallions, any type of ground meat mixture I make her (supplemented with egg shells), raw chicken WINGS only, and raw rib bones.  She wont touch the rest... or she'll carry it around... crying until she can go bury it.

With offals, she just flat out refuses to eat it raw... she'll actually PICK it out of her food bowl and leave it on the floor and eat the rest of her meal.... so I just boil it with some garlic for her.  And suddenly she decided she didnt want anything to do wtih raw eggs....so now I slightly poach it for her....

Oh wells... I guess it's better since I feed such a wide variety of her pre made raw medallions, my pre made mixes, RMBs, some cooked offals, kibbles, and canned, I'm sure she's getting all the essential she needs... lol

    Maze loves ground beef

I was going to suggest starting with ground beef. I made Satin Balls yesterday (Jaia lost weight recently with an illness and I have to get some weight back on him) and with all the stuff in there, it makes the raw beef VERY tasty!

I made satin balls when Heidi was having some issues as well.  She loved them.  That and chicken broth poured over her kibble worked well.

I haven't tried Satin Balls yet because she really doesn't need help putting the weight on. Actually she's getting chunky.. Hmmm.. Have to fix that.

I've found Maze LOVES chicken broth but it has to hot, fresh from the pot.. Lol.So now when I have soup, I split the broth with her.

    Hope Jaia is feeling better!!

Most of the dogs I know that have gone on homecooked/raw have lost weight. Except for Jill, who was too skinny anyway, and she put weight on. Go figure.

Maybe you could try small like you would with a kitten or puppy. Like chicken necks, or wing tips. Do you guys get pet mince over there? Over here we can get chicken mince for dogs that has a lot of chunky bits of bone. It's a little crunchy and chewy, but tiny pieces.

Good luck with getting her off the kibble. It was easy for Penny. She'd had bones all her life and didn't actually like kibble, I discovered. She was over the moon when she started to entertain the idea that the ground meat and vegies was here to stay.

My dogs prefer their chicken frozen, you could try that.  They slurp the liver up like jello shots though so I'm clueless on that.  There really isn't anything my dogs won't eat, gluttons both of them.
