I agree with Callie and Jetta Baby. You can get a lot of different grains in health food stores that she hasn't had before; for example, turkey and amaranth or pork and buckwheat may be a good combination to try. The grains must be cooked very thoroughly, more than you would cook them for yourself. Dogs have the digestive enzyme to digest grains, but they don't chew, which is why they don't digest them as well as we do. My veterinary dermatologist had me put Jessie on an elimination diet for 8 weeks before adding other foods to see what she would react to. During that time she couldn't have any thing else, including supplements. When you start introducing other foods to see if Maizy's allergic to them, you only add one food at a time. It can take as long as 2 weeks for a dog to react to a food but usually you will know in a matter of hours to days. For example, when I added an ounce of chicken a day to Jessie's food she was chewing her feet within 3 days. I really hope you find out what Maizy's allergic to so she can have some relief. By the way, you said that your sister's dog got allergy shots and developed kidney trouble; was that steroid shots? Jessie gets allergy shots too, but they have extracts of the things she's most allergic to, including dust mites and many grasses. She needs very little medication; she's not even taking antihistamines right now. I had her tested by a veterinary dermatologist, who determined which extracts to put in her serum. She only gets a shot every 2 weeks.
