Allergies and switching again!

I'm kind of thinking that route too, as it doesn't take much to trigger a reaction for her allergies. I appreciate all the input, though. Thank you very much.

I agree with Callie and Jetta Baby. You can get a lot of different grains in health food stores that she hasn't had before; for example, turkey and amaranth or pork and buckwheat may be a good combination to try. The grains must be cooked very thoroughly, more than you would cook them for yourself. Dogs have the digestive enzyme to digest grains, but they don't chew, which is why they don't digest them as well as we do. My veterinary dermatologist had me put Jessie on an elimination diet for 8 weeks before adding other foods to see what she would react to. During that time she couldn't have any thing else, including supplements. When you start introducing other foods to see if Maizy's allergic to them, you only add one food at a time. It can take as long as 2 weeks for a dog to react to a food but usually you will know in a matter of hours to days. For example, when I added an ounce of chicken a day to Jessie's food she was chewing her feet within 3 days. I really hope you find out what Maizy's allergic to so she can have some relief. By the way, you said that your sister's dog got allergy shots and developed kidney trouble; was that steroid shots? Jessie gets allergy shots too, but they have extracts of the things she's most allergic to, including dust mites and many grasses. She needs very little medication; she's not even taking antihistamines right now. I had her tested by a veterinary dermatologist, who determined which extracts to put in her serum. She only gets a shot every 2 weeks.

You know, I really don't know for sure,I know she didn't go real often.I'll have to ask my daughter.I do know she spent plenty of money on that poor, old dog. I watched that dog everyday while my daughter was at work and thats when I fell in love with the breed. It was so hard having to put her down,I hugged her the whole time.Like the vet said, they could do something to give her a little more time, but that only prolongs the inevitable. I will be sure to ask my daughter and let you know.

I PM'd you in regards to the shots.

Sorry, meant to say this was for jesses_mom,as she had asked a question about the type of shot my daughter's dog got.

Well, we bought Taste of the Wild Pacific Salmon for Maizy yesterday. She loves it!   It seems her itching is already better. She seems more relaxed, too. I know it's way too soon to speculate, but I sure hopes this helps her. I'm also going to put a little coconut oil on her food also. So it would seem she's not allergic to the salmon oil if she can eat this .We'll see what happens as time goes by----Thank You all for your input.
